Compare molecules based upon relative strength of intermolecular forces as well
as surface tension, viscosity, vapor pressure, boiling point, and melting point.
Goal:
Using intermolecular forces determine which compound has the highest boiling point.

Acetic acid has the highest boiling point. The strength of the acetic acid is the strongest
compared to the others because it not only has Dipole-dipole and London dispersion, but
it also has hydrogen bonding. Hydrogen bonding is typically stronger than Dipole-dipole
and London dispersion forces. The stronger the IMFs is, the higher the boiling point will
be. Hydrogen bonding will also have a high difference in electrostatic behavior and more
polarity causing it to have more energy than the others. More energy will also make it to
have strong IMFs, causing a high boiling point. Butane will be the weakest and have the
lowest boiling point with London dispersion forces. Acetic acid will be the strongest with
the highest boiling point and Acetone will be in the middle of the two molecules with
Dipole-dipole and London dispersion forces.
