Activities and Explorations: Nonpolar and Polar Solutions demonstration due
Oct. 2 at 11:59 PM worth 10 points
Instructions:
Watch the Nonpolar and Polar Solutions demonstration and answer the
following questions. Upload your work on this page to Brightspace by typing or writing
your responses and saving the file AS A PDF FILE.
Data observations (evidence):
1.
(3 pts) Casey demonstrated what happens to water (H
2
O) and hexanes (C
6
H
14
) in the
presence of an electrostatic charge. What happened when the charged rod was held
next to each solution as it was dispensed from the buret?
H
2
O: The positive charge from the rod by the fur caused water to bend.
Hexane: Nothing that can be deflected with the naked eye happened.
2.
(2 pts.) Draw the Lewis structure for Ethanol (CH
3
CH
2
OH), an alcohol used as
the active ingredient in hand sanitizer to kill viruses and bacteria. Draw in a
molecular dipole if one exists (hint: Are there any polar bonds? If yes, indicate the
+ and – regions of the bond by using an arrow.).
3.
If Casey were to place ethanol, CH
3
CH
2
OH, in one of the burets and hold the charged
rod next to a stream of it, what do you think would happen? Would the stream of liquid
bend or not?
Claim
: (1pt) Write a claim about what would happen when ethanol is dispensed
from the buret and the charged rod is held next to the stream of ethanol.
When CH
3
CH
2
OH is placed in one of the burets and hold the charged rod next to
a stream of it, it will bend.
4.
Reasoning
: Assemble an argument using your data, observations, and evidence
to justify your claim.
Explain your reasoning and use scientific principles that we
have explored in class.
(1 pt.) Restate your claim
(2 pt.) Use at least 1 piece of evidence from the video .
(1 pts.) Use the Lewis structure from #2, and what you concluded about
its polarity to support your claim.
The CH
3
CH
2
OH will bend when it is placed next to a charged rod. A polar
molecule that has a slightly negative and slightly positive charge (due to
the difference in electronegativity) will bend. Looking at the Lewis structure
of ethanol, it is polar because the atoms are sharing electrons unequally
and has different types of atoms bonded to the central atom. Oxygen will
be slightly negative, and hydrogen will be slightly positive. Due to the
polarity of the molecule, it will attract to the charged rod.

5. Methane clathrate also called methane hydrate is a form of ice in which methane gas has been
trapped inside the crystal structure. Methane hydrate has the formula CH4-5% H20 or 4CH4-23H20.
Large quantities of methane hydrate have been discovered in ocean sediments around the world.
Mining these deposits to obtain methane (i.e. natural gas) has been discussed for years. Determine
the percent water in methane hydrate. How many moles of methane could be recovered from 1.00
ton (2000 Ibs) of methane hydrate? [1 kg = 2.2 Ibs]
