All Rights Reserved Lab #1: Lab Safety 70 Points INTRODUCTION: Even though this is an online class, safety is still the focus of any science course. Many laboratories contain significant risks, and the prevention of laboratory accidents requires great care and constant vigilance. Examples of risk factors include high voltages, high and low pressures and temperatures, corrosive and toxic chemicals and chemical vapors, radiation, fire, explosions, and biohazards including infective organisms and their toxins. Measures to protect against laboratory accidents include safety training and enforcement of laboratory safety policies, safety review of experimental designs, the use of personal protective equipment and the use of the buddy system for particularly risky operations. Most safety training in the workforce is done through on-line simulations and videos like the ones you will using for this lab. DIRECTIONS: Perform each part of the lab below. You will be watching videos and performing safety simulations. Use the Directions for Submitting an Assignment in Canvas found in your syllabus to complete this lab. At the end of the lab you will need to upload 1 training certificate along with this document for credit. Be aware of the directions for each part. The videos are really short so pay attention. Here are a few tips to help while watching the videos: (Note – these are just suggestions and are not required to complete the lab) 1. Pause the video to write/type your answers, then watch the video again to make sure all questions were answered correctly. 2. These videos are all Closed Caption so even though you may not need it, it its helpful to see the scrip when pausing the video. PART 1: Lab Safety Lesson 1: Proper Dress and PPE Video (10 points) The lab environment is hazardous by nature. The actual risk is largely determined by you and those working with you. It's your responsibility to know and follow the rules and be able to recognize potential safety hazards. The first consideration is proper dress. What you wear in the lab can help prevent serious, even fatal injuries. Often, you'll be working with chemicals that could harm you if they come into contact with your skin. That's why you need PPE - Personal Protective Equipment. For general lab work, a lab coat, safety glasses or goggles, and gloves are required. Directions: Click on the link below or watch through Canvas and answer the questions below. https://www.ncbionetwork.org/educational-resources/videos/lab-safety-lesson-1-proper-dress-and- ppe Question Answer 1. What is the first thing to consider while working in the lab? 2. Why should you not wear shorts and sandals in the lab? 3. What are some suggestions on the proper way to dress?
4. What should you do with personal items? 5. List some of the Personal Protective Equipment or PPEs for the lab. 6. What should you were if you are working with splash hazards, volatile, or reactive solutions? 7. What can safety glasses protect you from? 8. When would you need to wear chemical resistant goggles? 9. What kind of gloves should be worn in the lab? 10. What should you always do before leaving the lab? PART 2: Lab Safety Lesson 2: Safety Equipment Video (10 Points) In this lesson, we'll talk about safety equipment found in the lab. These items may help you save a life - if and when - an accident occurs. Safety shower and eye wash station Fire extinguisher Fire blanket First aid kit Evacuation route Chemical fume hood Directions: Click on the link below or watch through Canvas and answer the questions below. https://www.ncbionetwork.org/educational-resources/videos/lab-safety-lesson-2-safety-equipment Questions Answers 1. What should you do when working in the lab for the first time? 2. What kind of equipment must every lab contain? 3. What should you do if a chemical or flame exposure has occurred? 4. What is the eye was station used for? 5. What are the 4 types of fire, what do they consist of, and how can they be extinguished? Fill in the table to the right. Type of Fire Consists of.. How Extinguished
6. What kind of fire extinguishers are used in the lab and what type of fire are they effective against? 7. When would you use a fire blanket? 8. What should the first aid kit contain? 9. Where in the lab should you find an evacuation route map? 10. Why should you test lab safety equipment often? PART 3: Lab Safety Lesson 3: Behavior Video (10 Points) Your behavior goes a long way to insuring that the lab is a safe environment for everyone. Follow SOPs Never eat, drink, chew gum, or apply makeup Never work alone Practice good housekeeping Clean spills Properly dispose of broken glass Report unsafe conditions immediately Directions: Click on the link below or watch through Canvas and answer the questions below. https://www.ncbionetwork.org/educational-resources/videos/lab-safety-lesson-3-behavior Questions Answers 1. What 2 items should be respected in the lab room? 2. What are SOPs? 3. List the steps of the Standard Operating Procedures? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5 6. 7. 8.

PART 4 : Lab Safety Lesson 4: Chemical Hazards Video (10 Points) Many of the chemicals we use in the lab are potentially dangerous, especially under high heat, pressure, or when they're mixed with other chemicals. In this lesson, we'll learn about the 2 most important tools to identify chemical hazards: Safety Data Sheets (SDS) Chemical Labels Directions: Click on the link below or watch through Canvas and answer the questions below. https://www.ncbionetwork.org/educational-resources/videos/lab-safety-lesson-4-chemical-hazards Questions Answers 1. When are chemicals used in the lab especially dangerous? 2. What are the 2 main tools used when identifying chemical hazards? 3. What is a Safety Data Sheet? 4. What information is found on the SDS? 5. What does GHS stand for? 6. What is found in each Section of the GHS? What information can be found here? Fill out the table. The first one has been done for you. GHS Section # Information description 1. Identification Chemicals’ name, description, and manufacturers contact info. 2. 3. 4. 5. Nothing said in video 6. 7. 8.
9. 10. 11. 12 - 16 7. What is another way to learn about a chemical? 8. What information can be found on the product itself? 9. What do pictograms consist of? 10. List some of the pictogram examples mentioned in the video. PART 5 : Lab Safety Lesson 5: Safe Chemical Handling Video (10 Points) It's vital that you prepare for each lab activity by determining the possible risks, donning the right PPE, and be aware of any protective measures and emergency responses that are pertinent for the chemicals that you'll be working with. Eye protection Transporting chemicals Lab aprons and arm-length rubber gloves Inhalation exposure Chemical spill response Flammables Chemical disposal Directions: Click on the link below or watch through Canvas and answer the questions below. https://www.ncbionetwork.org/educational-resources/videos/lab-safety-lesson-5-safe-chemical- handling Questions Answers 1. What should you do before you begin a lab activity? 2. What is the rule for diluting acids or bases? 3. Why must chemicals be handled safely? 4. What kind of eye protection should be worn when working with chemicals? 5. What should you do if you wear prescription glasses? 6. What should you wear to protect your body while working in the lab?

You will demonstrate the following concepts learned in this lab module: Proper Attire PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) Safe Environment Safety Equipment Following Directions Directions: You will need to fill in your name for the training certificate that will be given at the end of the lab. This certificate needs to be turned in with this assignment for a grade. Be sure and use your real name the way it appears in the grade book. No blank certificates will be accepted. This is a secure educational site and is safe to use your name. You may use your first name and last initial if you like. You will not be asked for any other information. Note: Make sure that your name appears on the certificate, then save to your computer. Save this as Lab Safety Certificate. Then, upload it into canvas for this assignment. https://www.ncbionetwork.org/iet/labsafety/ You may redo the simulation for a better grade.
