Short-term theories have become popular in the past number of years due to the pressure from insurance companies and the legal needs to address the clients' presenting problems. With this in mind, why might it be important to consider using solution-focused theory? What can a counselor do to make sure they support their client effectively in a short-term situation? How do your skills need to change when your time with a client is limited? Short-term theories are not one size fits all; regardless of the insurance debacle, evaluating if the Client would genuinely benefit from shorter sessions is essential. However, if it comes down to a necessity to do so, solution-focused therapy is a great way to start with therapy for those with limited options. The textbook explains an example of a Counselor asking an individual what they want out of therapy; the individual responds by desiring to be less angry and having less of a perfectionist mindset (Murdock, 2017). When looking at that example, the Counselor asked such a simple question but gained tremendous insight into the Client and their goals for themselves. When supporting a client in a short- term situation, it is essential for the Counselor to have an idea of what each session should cover; for the individual mentioned previously, this meant determining how to help them be less angry with those around them and lessen those perfectionist thoughts. The solution-focused therapeutic approach has a variety of techniques that involve different questioning. However, one of the techniques is externalizing, which involves giving the problem a name and separating it from the Client (Murdock, 2017). This technique is excellent throughout the limited sessions; this named problem is being worked on without the Client feeling their problem is all they are. Skills must change frequently during sessions; this can mean incorporating a couple of techniques or more into a session so that nothing is missed when going after the client's goals. By the last session, the hope would be that the Client understands what to do independently when facing the issue. Therapy is not a one-time fix; it can take years of work for the Client to change the thing they are unhappy with. The Counselor must communicate that the Client must continue to work on this, which may be a daily task. Jimenez, L., Hadalgo, V., Baena, S., Leon, A., & Lorence, B. (2019). Effectiveness of
