Noah Vlodek CMP SCI 3411 Professor Amula Reddy Lakku 30 October 2023 My Graph with Lowest Accessibility Looking back on this jitter plot I created for the median income in the 3,000 U.S. Counties, it was not very accessible. The color-coded key I used for each state does not work because most of the hues are super similar. For a colorblind person, this graphic would look just like a lot of black dots, and it would be hard for them to tell which point correspond to a specific state. Especially since the outliers are in one specific color, most color bilind people will not be able to tell the difference. The choice of color for the outliers (red) is not the best either because people with Deuteranomaly may perceive this color as similar to the green already in the graph. If I were to make this jitter plot more accessible, I may use a different symbol for all the outliers so these can be seen by everyone, even the color blind individuals. I would also get rid of the legend because that is redundant chartjunk anyway. Also, I would alternate between blue and
yellow colors through the states so that it would be easy to tell when we switch from state to state. Also, I am not sure I had a specific use for the color in this graphic to begin with. So, using just two colors would help the graph be more accessible to colorblind individuals. The gridlines also would be removed, especially the vertical ones. These are some of the steps I’d take to make my graphic more accessible.
