CHEM1B – Section 202 Name: Whitney Bourassa Date: 2/9/24 Graphing Exercise Lab Report OBJECTIVE(S): In this lab exercise, we will learn how to transfer data from our experiment and use it in Excel. In Excel, we will learn how to calculate our data in the software program and take that data to create a scatter plat using graphing software. Within our graph we will learn how to create a trendline and interpret the data from our newly made graph. METHODS: The procedures for this experiment were taken from lab manual: Valentin, J. et al, General Chemistry II (Chemistry 1 B) Experiments. (2020 Version). Evergreen Valley College, San Jose, CA. DATA/RESULTS: Exercise #1: Graphing and calculating using the “heat of reaction” equation to determine ∆H˚ (heat of reaction or heat of enthalpy for a reaction) Version #: 10 Calculation and Results: keq T(Kelvin) 1/T(1/K) ln K 1054 1432 0.000698 6.960348 365 1599 0.000625 5.899897 130 1744 0.000573 4.867534 86 1911 0.000523 4.454347 Graph of ln K eq vs. 1/T: 1
Slope of Curve (from graph) = 14871 Value of R (with units) = 8.314 J K-1 mol-1 ∆H˚ (in joules) = -123637.5 J Exercise #2: Graphing and calculating using the Arrhenius equation to determine E a (Activation Energy) Version #: 10 Calculation and Results: k(L mol-1 s T (K) 1/T(1/K) ln k 0.0514 278 0.003597 -2.96812 0.123 298 0.003356 -2.09557 0.202 308 0.003247 -1.59949 0.352 318 0.003145 -1.04412 Graph of ln k vs. 1/T: Slope of Curve (from graph) = -4183.3 Value of R (with units) = 8.314 J K-1 mol-1 2 Show your calculations for ∆H˚ here: delta H= -(14871)(8.314) J= -123637.5 J Show your calculations for E a here: Ea=-(-4183.3)(8.314)= 34779.95= 34780.0 J
E a (in joules) = 34780.0 J Post-Lab Questions: The post-lab questions are on Canvas. Please go there to answer all the questions pertaining to this assignment. (Nothing to submit for this section.) 3
