Chapter 9 Lab: Velocity and Distance Curves Statement of the Problem The purpose of this lab is to plot a velocity curve of height and interpret this curve as well as a distance curve. Reference Chapter 9 Materials Needed Graph paper Data provided below of gain in height from years 1 through 18 Procedure Create a graph like figure 9.2 in chapter 9. The x -axis should be age in years and the y -axis should be height gain in centimeters per year. Place the data points in the table below on the graph. Assume birth height (length) to be 52 centimeters. Add the gain in height per year to determine final adult height. Data Points Age Gain in height (centimeters) 1 24 2 10 3 7.5 4 7 5 6.5 6 6 7 6 8 6 9 5.5 10 5.5 11 5 12 5 13 6 From P.S. Haibach-Beach, G.D. Reid, and D.H. Based on the graph, what is the sex of the person (we assume that the shape of the graph reflects a typical male or female for the first 12 years). Please justify your choice of sex. The person's growth pattern, which shows a significant drop in growth after age 12, makes it possible that the person is male. For boys, the growth spurt usually lasts until they are in their mid-teens, which means they grow faster for a longer time than girls. As boys hit puberty, their growth rates tend to slow down, which fits with the steady drop in growth rate. 2. What evidence exists that the individual is maturing typically, early, or late? The information given points to a normal development process. After age 12, the growth rate slowly slows down. This is normal for growth during puberty. From the numbers, we can see that there is no sign of early or late development. Early maturation would slow down a lot before age 12, while late maturation would mean that growth would speed up for longer after age 14. 3. Based upon the individual’s final height and sex, go to figure 9.2 in chapter 9 and determine the individual’s percentile ranking at age 18. From P.S. Haibach-Beach, G.D. Reid, and D.H. Collier, 2018, Motor learning and development web resource, 2nd ed. (Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics). 2
