Chapter 9 Lab: Velocity and
Distance Curves
Statement of the Problem
The purpose of this lab is to plot a velocity curve of height and interpret this curve as well as a distance
curve.
Reference
Chapter 9
Materials Needed
Graph paper
Data provided below of gain in height from years 1 through 18
Procedure
Create a graph like figure 9.2 in chapter 9. The
x
-axis should be age in years and the
y
-axis should be
height gain in centimeters per year.
Place the data points in the table below on the graph. Assume birth height (length) to be 52 centimeters.
Add the gain in height per year to determine final adult height.

Gain In Height (Cm)
Discussion
1.
Based on the graph, what is the sex of the person (we assume that the shape of the graph
reflects a typical male or female for the first 12 years). Please justify your choice of sex.
The person's growth pattern, which shows a significant drop in growth after age 12, makes it possible
that the person is male. For boys, the growth spurt usually lasts until they are in their mid-teens, which
means they grow faster for a longer time than girls. As boys hit puberty, their growth rates tend to slow
down, which fits with the steady drop in growth rate.
2.
What evidence exists that the individual is maturing typically, early, or late?
The information given points to a normal development process. After age 12, the growth rate slowly
slows down. This is normal for growth during puberty. From the numbers, we can see that there is no
sign of early or late development. Early maturation would slow down a lot before age 12, while late
maturation would mean that growth would speed up for longer after age 14.
3.
Based upon the individual’s final height and sex, go to figure 9.2 in chapter 9 and determine the
individual’s percentile ranking at age 18.

Experimental Procedure Graphing
1.
Obtain a 100 mL graduated cylinder. Add 10.0 mL of the liquid to be analyzed to the cylinder and obtain the mass. Write this mass on the results table. NOTE: it does not have to be exactly 10.0 mL. If something other than 10.0 mL is added, note that change on the data table.
2.
Continue to add 10mL portions of liquid to the cylinder and obtain the mass each time. Write the cumulative volume, making sure to measure your total volume accurately with each addition, and its corresponding mass in the table. DO NOT EMPTY THE CYLINDER BETWEEN ADDITIONS OF LIQUID.
3.
Dispose of the liquid in the appropriate container in the fume
-hood.
4.
Draw a graph of mass versus volume. Use the guidelines set forth in the example. Make sure the graph takes up as much of the graph paper as possible

Discuss the language demands included in the lesson on mixing substances in a 5th-grade classroom by Identifying key vocabulary terms students must know in order to master the learning objectives for the lesson based on the below standard and learning objective.
Standard
Conduct an investigation to determine whether the mixing of two or more substances results in new substances.
Learning Objective
Given a variety of substances and safety equipment in a classroom setting, students will be able to conduct an experiment to mix two or more substances and observe the results. They will be able to correctly identify whether a new substance has been formed as a result of the mixing, based on observable changes such as color change, formation of a precipitate, or change in temperature, with at least 80% accuracy.

1. Find given value along x axis.
2. From this point, trace a straight line vertically (parallel to the y-axis) until it intersects with the
line graph.
3. Then, trace a line horizontally (parallel to the x axis) from the intersect to the y-axis.
4. The value of y corresponding to the given x value is where the traced line intercepts with the y-
