Discussion Questions: -
Can you explain why you feel warm when you are standing away from a
campfire?
-
The reason why you feel warm when standing away from a campfire is because
of heat transfer. The type of heat transfer is radiation. Infrared waves, which are
a type of thermal radiation, are emitted by the campfire.
The waves will travel
through the air till reaching my body and when it reaches me they will be
absorbed.
This will cause the molecules on me (like my skin and even clothes )
to increase kinetic energy. They will begin to more and start to give off a warming
sensation. Due to their being a temp difference between my body and the fire
(me being colder)
the is going to be a heat transfer. The heat will travel from the
high temps of the fire to my body's low temp. That is why I will feel warm when I
am standing far from the campfire.
2. Why does a carpeted floor feel warmer to bare feet than tile or wood even
though all surfaces are the same temperature?
-
A carpeted floor will feel warmer to bare feet than tile or wood flooring because of
there are differences in thermal conductivity. The carpet will have lower thermal
conductivity, and which means that it will not be that efficient in conducting heat
away from my feet.
This will cause the carpet to feel a lot warmer because my
body heat remains close to my feet( body heat stays trapped near mu feet).
Causing it to feel warm. While tile and wood flooring will feel colder because they
have a high thermal conductivity. This causes the tile and wood to feel colder in
comparison to the carpet because they can quickly absorb and conduct away the
heat from your feet.
3. What information would you need to predict whether heat transfer would
occur when two objects or materials interact?
-
I would need to know the temperature( the initial temps of both objects)
because heat transfer will only occur from high temps to low temperatures.
I will also need to know the thermal conductivity of each of the materials
to know if heat transfer will occur. The reason why is that when a material
has high conductivity can transfer heat better than low. I also what to know
the duration of the interaction between the 2 materials. If the time was
short, there might not be enough time for there to be a heat transfer
between the 2 objects
What would happen if a person who is wearing a heavy winter jacket were
to place a thermometer inside the jacket next to his or her skin? What
would happen if we took the same jacket, after it had been hanging in a
closet, and placed a thermometer inside?
-
If someone were to place a thermometer inside the heavy winter jacket
next to their skin, both the environment inside the jacket and the person's
skin temperature would be recorded by the thermometer. As a result of the
jacket's insulation, traps body heat. It would be warmer than the outside
temperature
of
the
jacket.
The
same
jacket
would
measure
the
temperature inside the closet rather than the individual's body temperature
if a thermometer were placed inside it after it had been hanging in the
closet. The jacket would have adjusted to the closet's surroundings while it
was there, and the thermometer would reflect that temperature. When not
next to the subject's skin, it would not be able to measure body heat.

Decide how the sketches below would be listed, if they were listed in order of decreasing potential energy. That is, select "1" beside the sketch that shows the
system with the highest potential energy, select "2" beside the sketch that shows the system with the next highest potential energy, and so on.
Note for advanced students: since the units of each charge are not written, you may assume any convenient and reasonable unit, for example coulombs or

The greenhouse effect is a natural process that maintains the Earth's temperature within a range that sustains life. Which statement accurately describes the cause of the enhanced greenhouse effect?
O a. Burning fossil fuels causes an increase in the amount of atmospheric greenhouse gases, such as CO2, resulting in the enhanced greenhouse effect.
O b. Increased amounts of solar energy and infrared radiation are trapped by atmospheric greenhouse gases as a result of the sun burning hotter, which contributes to the enhanced greenhouse effect.
O c. Cellular respiration and photosynthesis use CO2 from the atmosphere, reducing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
o d. Ultraviolet radiation from cyclic solar flares enhance the greenhouse effect by increasing the amount of thermal radiation absorbed by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
