MIST WK 6:Video Case 1. What is Rockwell Automation’s relationship with the oil and gas industry? Rockwell Automations relationship with the oil and gas industry is extremely strong. Their tight relationship with the oil and gas industry is strong and beneficial to both parties. Rockwell Automation helps with making the oil and gas industry more sustainable, efficient, and safer. The oil and gas industry relies on Rockwell in a sense and vice versa. The oil and gas industry helps Rockwell by providing them with constant revenue and new opportunities for their company. This steady relationship they have is super important as it allows both of these industries to do well. It is important for both Rockwell and the gas and oil industry to keep this relationship as they both are supporting each other. 2. How has the Internet of Things changed the oil and gas industry? The Internet of Things gives Rockwell and other companies the opportunity to provide unprecedented services for their animation products. Using the Internet of Things the company can provide services more effectively and successfully then they have before. Rockwell uses Microsoft Azure as a data warehouse. Data can now be generated in real time from sensors that allow the company to predict and prevent problems before they even happen. They are able to monitor performance and inventory of their systems which improves operational performance for its customers. The Internet of Things allows predictive maintenance which prevents equipment failures and saves costs. 3. Why was Microsoft Azure a good choice for Rockwell? Microsoft Azure is a good choice for Rockwell because it dramatically improves their efficiency and revolutionized the petroleum supply chain. Microsoft Azure is a cloud computing platform created for developing, building, and managing applications and services through a global network of Microsoft data centers. The technology is infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and is popular among companies everywhere. Because Microsoft is able to operate at a large scale and computing resources have become more powerful and less costly over time, they are able to provide server space and computing power to many other companies who need it like Rockwell. Azure allows Rockwell to continue running at a more efficient and cost efficient level. 4. What business problems did Rockwell’s partnership with Microsoft and implementation of IoT technologies solve or alleviate?
Rockwell's partnership with Microsoft and the implementation of IoT technology alleviate and solve so many business problems. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of items that are equipped with sensor and internet connectivity to help prevent and solve automation issues. The items help with creating data that provides helpful information to ensure their resource optimization. IoT helps with asset management, remote support, and more efficient and better repairs. It allows for companies to deal with problems easier and more efficiently and sometimes prevents problems from occurring as well. With IoT Rockwell is able to form and use its competitive advantage in the industry from preventing maintenance and dealing with it more efficiently. This then ensures that Rockwell saves money and time as well. 5. What are some other common applications for the Internet of Things? Rockwell Automation is the main example of the Internet of Things talked about in this video but there are also many other common applications for IoT that are used in many different organizations. A common application of IoT would be in the healthcare field. IoT can help with monitoring patients vital signs more efficiently and quickly, also tracking the medication, and helping with maintaining smart medical devices. Another common application is in the agricultural world. IoT can help with monitoring the conditions to ensure that crops are being produced at the most efficient rate, tracking the crops and livestock to help farmers with being more efficient so they can focus on other things, and IoT can also help control the irrigation systems to ensure that crops are being taken care of and to make it more efficient with time for a farmer and also cost efficient.
