Through United Way 211, people can call, text, or meet in person and get connected with a specialist who can help them with different social services (food, employment, education, family support, healthcare, housing, etc.). This service is available 24/7 and anyone can reach out for help. The specialists have over 90 hours of training before they can work with clients, and they are all diverse in different educational backgrounds, and cultural backgrounds (United Way 211, 2024). Once specialists connect with people, they ask questions, find the community resources,
3 connect people with resources, develop plans with people, and in the end, they follow up to check-in or see if additional help is needed. Another agency is The City Mission. The City Mission works with the homeless population and helps provide them with basic needs (food, shelter, clothing), job training, and personal caseworkers to help them throughout their journey. This agency also helps people who need mental health counseling and helps them with different types of support groups. 5 After doing my research, I found that a lot of the agencies in Cleveland focus on helping the community with basic needs and helping them out of homelessness while the agencies in San Jose focus more on education and health. San Jose has a very low poverty level so there aren’t many agencies who offer help for housing and food services since people are typically of high- income while in Cleveland there is a higher rate of poverty which means their communities need more help.
