1 2-2 Final Project Part I Milestone One: Interview Scenario & Questions Southern New Hampshire University HSE 410: Case Management March 17, 2024
2 Scenario: The Ricardo family consists of the mother Laura (29), the older brother Richie (16), the middle brother Luis (13) and the youngest Frannie (2). Laura is raising the children on her own because the dad Felipe (32) is currently in prison doing 10 years for assault. This family has been referred to ACS by a pediatrician after the youngest daughter Frannie who is 2 years old has been found with signs of sexual and physical abuse. The little girl was found with bruises on her back and bottom. The family is low-income and recently got evicted from their apartment and has been staying with a friend of Laura’s. Laura works to provide for her children and her friend and friend’s husband watch Frannie while Laura is at work. One day when Laura returned from work, she noticed Frannie wouldn’t move from her bed and when she went to change the girl, she saw bleeding in her diaper and marks on the girl. Laura had since moved from the friend’s home and had to quit her job and move into a shelter. There is an open case and the police have gotten involved. Laura now must figure out how to support her family through this tough time. In this scenario, I will be the CPS case manager and it is my job to help the Ricardo family by receiving the different types of help they need. I will evaluate and support this family with the programs I feel will be the most helpful and can help them make a change. This family needs many services, and they have a wide range of needs. Frannie has gone through abuse and even though she is still a toddler, it is important to watch her development and potentially place her in counseling so she can have that support early on. Laura needs help with childcare, employment, and finding housing. Laura does have family members that are willing to help her, but they live out of state, so it is difficult for Laura to receive the help. Since she is a single parent, it is
3 important to place her in a support group of women who have been through similar situations so she can understand that she is not alone. She will also likely blame herself for Frannie’s abuse and not want to leave her in anyone’s care so getting her counseling will also be helpful. Outside of the abuse of Frannie, Laura has also endured her own trauma. Recently, she spoke up about her own abuse as a child and how a family member sexually abused her as a child. Laura does struggle with her mental health due to this trauma and helping Frannie go through a similar situation has taken her back to her abuse. The Ricardo Family does have strengths, they have family support, and the family has stuck together through this tough time. Laura’s older children have been very helpful and have been sensitive to this situation. Laura also has her nursing degree and high school diploma which can help her with her employment search. Legally and ethically, I have to follow all standards to help this family. This is a sensitive situation dealing with the abuse of a young child which could be difficult as a case manager to deal with, especially since I have children of my own. It is important that I keep my personal feelings and opinions to myself. Since I will be sharing information with counselors who will work with Laura and Frannie, it is important to remind Laura of her rights and inform her of what information will be given. “Clients should be informed that they may withdraw consent at any time except where denied by court order and should be able to ask questions before agreeing to services” (National Organization of Human Services, 2015). Since Frannie is a child, I will need permission from Laura for any services provided for Frannie before I can move ahead. This is a case that will require immediate attention and a lot of supervision due to the circumstances so this will be treated at a high crisis level. Interview Questions: 1. Thank you for coming in today, Laura. Before we jump in, how are you feeling?
