1 SPT565 Sample Milestones One First Topic: Brining NBA Games to Slovenia A. Mission Statement The NBA has a simple mission statement of “inspiring and connecting people everywhere through the power of basketball” ( Our Mission and Values – NBA Careers , 2022). The league expands on that statement further, highlighting the importance of and focus on the globalization of the sport by emphasizing that as part of the NBA’s mission, we export games and content to fans in more than 200 countries and territories and in more than 50 languages. There are no limits to the places where people play and watch basketball, so there are no limits to the places where people want to engage with the NBA. ( Our Mission and Values – NBA Careers , 2022) The league also believes that by bringing the game of basketball around the world, they can connect people of different cultures, develop dialogue on important issues across the globe, build up and enhance communities, and assist in people communicating and understanding others from various countries and cultures. The NBA has been exploring and expanding to the international market since 1978, when the Washington Bullets traveled to Tel Aviv, Israel to play an exhibition game with an Israeli squad. The first preseason game between two NBA teams held outside of the United States occurred in 1984, with the Phoenix Suns defeating the New Jersey Nets in Milan, Italy, and the first international regular season game was on November 2, 1990 between the Suns and the Utah Jazz in Tokyo, Japan. There have been 15 countries that have held preseason NBA contests, and

2 four countries (Japan, Mexico, England, and France) have hosted a regular season game, with the last being in Paris, France on January 19, 2023. B. Current State The international influence of the NBA can be seen on its rosters, as at the beginning of the current 2022-23 season, all 30 NBA teams had at least one player from outside of the U.S. In total, 120 players from 40 countries were on the opening-night rosters, with Canada leading the way with 22 NBA players from “north of the border”. Many of the international players have come from two NBA-led global initiatives, Basketball Without Borders (BWB) and NBA Global Academy. Both were established to bring together elite players from outside the U.S. to learn the game from top coaches and to compete against other highly skilled prospects. There were 14 international All-Stars at the start of the current NBA season, with the last four NBA MVPs residing outside of the U.S. – Giannis Antetokounmpo from Greece and Nikola Jokic from Serbia. The presumed next MVP, Joel Embiid from Cameroon, is one of 38 current players who participated in a BWB program prior to their NBA careers. Basketball has truly become a global sport, with several countries outside of the U.S. contending for and winning international titles such as the FIBA World Cup and Olympic medals. Long gone are the days when the U.S. would dominate international events, showcasing their talent in All-Star rosters known as “Dream Teams” to blow out lesser opponents. In fact, for the first time in 12 years, the United States fell out of the top spot in the world rankings in 2022, being surpassed by Spain, who won the 2019 World Cup and the European title in 2022. Europe has become a powerhouse in the international game, with seven of the top 10 countries in the men’s rankings residing across the Atlantic Ocean.

Goal One of the emerging locations for basketball in Europe is Slovenia, who placed fourth in their first Olympic appearance in Tokyo at the 2020 Summer Games and is currently ranked seventh in the world. There were three Slovenian players on an opening roster in 2022 – Goran Dragic of the Chicago Bulls, Vlatko Cancar of the Denver Nuggets, and Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks. Doncic has been a perennial All-Star and MVP candidate since arriving in the NBA four years ago, making the All-NBA team in each of his first three seasons in Dallas. He is one of the most recognizable players in the league, and a bonafide superstar at just 24 years old, and led his home country to their first-ever Olympic appearance in 2021. The Mavericks recently held a Slovenia Night during the final home game of the 2022-23 season, showcasing and embracing the culture and heritage of its biggest star, and allowed Doncic to play even though they were outside of the playoffs and resting the remainder of their starting lineup at the conclusion of the year. My proposal would be to bring the NBA to Slovenia to continue to develop a relationship between the league and that area of the world. Prior to the pandemic, the NBA was actively pursuing new locations and territories to bring games and players to, which would coincide with their mission to connect and inspire people everywhere through the sport. Basketball is clearly booming in Slovenia, judging by its recent status as a top 10 nation in the world rankings, and with their recent run to the medal rounds at the Olympics. Bringing some of the best players in the world to a smaller country like Slovenia could bring a boost to their economy and lead to the next wave of NBA stars who are likely already motivated by the success of Doncic. This could also lead to camps being developed in the country and more opportunities for both current and future players to learn from top coaching and face prospects from other parts of the world. 4 are also opportunities for the NBA to gain sponsorships from holding games in a country for the first time, so branching the game to a new location such as Slovenia would seem like a win-win for both the league and the country. Second Topic: Brining IndyCar Series to Sweden A. Mission Statement IndyCar Series’ mission statement is “We are intensely focused on being the best Open- Wheel Motorsports in the world and, through unwavering teamwork, will work tirelessly to achieve that goal.” (Note: This was created by the author due to the info was hard to find.). The series races on various tracks, with locations spanning ovals, streets, and road courses, and the circuit has not left the confines of North America since 2013. In total, IndyCar has held 14 races outside of North America, with stops in Japan, Australia, and Brazil previously on their schedule, but they have never ventured to Europe, which has been dominated by Formula One racing. B. Current State The current 2023 schedule is comprised of 17 races, with all but one in the United States. The series has gained in popularity recently, with the 2022 IndyCar series becoming the most- watched season in six years and the most-streamed season on record thanks to its partnerships with NBC Sports and Peacock. The 2022 season opening race, the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, drew the biggest audience for the start of an IndyCar season since 2011. The popularity of open-wheel racing has also received a huge boost from Netflix’ documentary focusing on the Formula One circuit, which has boosted interest and sponsorships for the mostly- European based rival of the IndyCar series. There are limited slots for F1 racers and teams in that series, so several drivers and teams have began migrating over to the IndyCar series, and four of the top five most popular drivers in a survey prior to the start of the 2022 season resided

5 outside of the United States – Romain Grosjean (France), Pato O’Ward (Mexico), Helio Castroneves (Brazil), and Scott Dixon (New Zealand). The idea of expanding to Europe is something that has been frowned upon by higherups in IndyCar, as competing with an established juggernaut that has seen massive growth in recent years in F1 would be a daunting task. However, some of the drivers would like to see that idea come to fruition, as Sweden’s Marcus Ericsson – who currently leads the 2023 IndyCar points standings – told NBC Sports last fall: We have a lot of international drivers coming into the series from all over the world, and it’s a pretty international series now. I think there’s opportunity there to take advantage of that… if we’d go to Europe, I’m pretty sure it would be a good success with fans and media. I think there’s a lot of potential there. But you have to be clever on where you go and how we promote it. (Ryan, 2022) Ericsson’s home country of Sweden could be a prime location for IndyCar to make their initial dive into European’s waters, as the popularity and success of several current Swedish drivers has led to a boost in network coverage of practices, qualifying, and races by Swedish TV. C. Goal Sweden could be the perfect spot for IndyCar to expand outside of North America, which would further establish its status as an international racing circuit. The Nordic countries of Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland currently do not host any Formula 1 races, although several prominent drivers in that series hail from that area of Europe. Formula 1 did hold annual races in Sweden from 1973 to 1978 named the Swedish Grand Prix, but left the area after two prominent Swedish drivers passed away, which led to a sharp decline in the interest and popularity of open-wheel racing. The circuit has not returned due to the lack of suitable

6 racetracks in the region, and the surrounding areas do not contain the resources or amenities that would support a massive international event such as a F1 race (Moores, 2020). However, as previously noted, there has been an increase in interest surrounding IndyCar racing in this area of Europe, and providing the citizens of Sweden with a professional race for the first time in 45 years could be a huge boost to both the country and the IndyCar series. Expanding to Europe could bring an entirely new audience to IndyCar, and could counteract F1’s attempts to branch out into the United States, as they currently have three U.S. events scheduled for the 2023 season – Miami, FL, Austin, TX, and Las Vegas, NV. IndyCar wouldn’t be directly competing with F1 by racing in Sweden, as they have no tracks that would be able to host a race, and would need to work around the F1 schedule to ensure that they had the peak number of eyes and buzz on them. A race could highlight the countries of the region, bring the necessary funds to improve the area and possibly even lead to the renovations needed to hold a F1 race in the future. By heeding the advice of a Swedish driver to be clever on where to hold a European race and how to promote it, maybe IndyCar could pave the way for F1 to return to the area, and maybe the two racing circuits could start working together more often in the near future.
