1 Milestone 1 Scenario A- Packers' New Stadium Tim Nicely Southern New Hampshire University SPT 620: Finance and Economics of Sports March 17 th , 2024 Proposed Project- Lambeau Field is the oldest stadium in the NFL and with it comes a rich history. It opened in 1957 and has sold out every home game since 1960 even after undergoing multiple renovations to add additional seating (Lewis, 2024). Even the most historic of locations will one day become obsolete. Lambeau has been exceptional home to the Green Bay Packers for over half a century, but it is time for it to join the Roman Coliseum as historic landmarks of the past and make way for a new stadium to take over Titletown. This new stadium will bring a new, exciting fan experience and the updated amenities and environment will keep fans entertained with attractions
2 far beyond just watching the Packers on the field. This new stadium will help bring in additional revenue year-round as a must-visit destination for a variety of events. Significant Revenue and Expenses- The most significant form of revenue for the Green Bay Packers in 2023 came from their “National Revenue” which is the amount of funds they bring in from the NFL’s revenue sharing. Per their 2023 Treasurer’s report, The Packers brought in $374.5 Million in national revenue ( Annual Report , 2023). The remainder of the Packers’ revenue is simply listed in their treasurer’s report as local revenue. This amount is listed at just under $236 million which comes from things such as ticket sales, merchandise sales, team sponsors, etc ( Annual Report , 2023). The largest expense listed in the treasurer’s report is obviously player costs. This is to be expected as the Packers had a total of over $294 million in player salaries for 2022-2023. Other than player salaries, the next largest expense was just general and administrative costs at just under $84 million and then sales, marketing, and fan engagement costs at just under $74 million ( Annual Report , 2023). These costs of course all pale in comparison to the player salaries, which make up over half the organization’s expenses on its own. Financial Health- The Green Bay Packers organization is in decent financial health. Anytime an organization is consistently profiting over $35 million it is hard to say otherwise. It is worth noting, however, that while revenue was up despite losing a home game to the NFL’s International Series initiative, expenses were also up over $13.5 million in 2023 compared to 2022, profit from operations were down, and there was a net loss from investments ( Annual Report , 2023).
3 Facilities expenses were up, and there have been more funds devoted to continued renovations of Labeau field. These consistent renovation investments and facility operation costs are just further evidence that now is the time to retire Lambeau and make the investment in a new stadium that will be more efficient and require less work year over year than the current aging landmark.
