Christian Nelson Mr. Phil Cumming BUS-151 31, October 2023 Assignment: Technology 1. Getting integrated: Discuss how technology affects your communication in various contexts including academic, professional, civic, and personal. Also discuss how your engagement with technology changes from context to context. For example, do you use online technology more in one context than another? In what contexts/situations might you prefer “old media” like phone, written letter, or even face-to-face communication? - Technology has affected my communication in many different ways. Playing online games has allowed me to engage in conversations with people I would have never met elsewhere. There are different kinds of interactions I will make online. Sometimes I may just like someones post, or share their post, or even respond to them in direct messages, and I also can have a full conversation with them. The context and situation that I prefer is just texting. 2. Print and broadcast media have been struggling to survive in a digitized world. Do some research on one of these media to see what some of the current issues are. Why are they struggling? What do you think they could do to remain profitable and relevant? -Print media, which includes newspapers and magazines, has faced significant challenges in the digital age. One prominent issue they have been grappling with is the decline in print circulation and advertising revenue, driven by several factors. Print media heavily relies on advertising
revenue, and the shift of advertisers to online platforms like Google and Facebook has resulted in a significant loss of ad revenue for traditional print publications. Print publications often have an aging readership demographic, making it challenging to attract younger readers who are more inclined to consume news through digital means. To remain profitable and relevant, print media can consider investing in a strong online presence; this is crucial. Many traditional print outlets have adapted by offering digital subscriptions, mobile apps, and high-quality online content. They should also optimize their websites for a better user experience. 3. As more media products become digital, issues of ownership and copyright get more attention. Identify some pros and cons of limits on sharing digital media and stricter copyright laws. - The issues of ownership and copyright in the digital media landscape have indeed become more complex and contentious. Copyright laws protect the intellectual property of creators and provide them with the incentive to produce original content. This protection is especially important in the digital age, where reproduction and distribution are easy. Strong copyright laws encourage creators to invest time and resources into producing high-quality content, as they have the potential to profit from their work without fear of it being stolen or pirated. On the other hand, stricter copyright laws can limit public access to knowledge and culture by making it more difficult to share, remix, or repurpose content for educational, creative, or transformative purposes. The digital landscape poses significant challenges for enforcing copyright laws, as it's often difficult to track and prosecute those who infringe on copyrights. The effort and resources required for enforcement can be substantial.
