Discussion Board 9: Breaux & Smith No unread replies. No replies. In this module, you watched a video presentation on assent in applied behavior analysis based on the recently published article, "Assent in applied behaviour analysis and positive behaviour support: Ethical considerations and practical recommendations. " by Breaux & Smith. Please note that this article is not required for the course at this time. If you would like to access it, you can request it through ILL. For this discussion board, 1. Discuss the importance of assent and assent withdrawal within the context of Applied Behavior Analysis 2. Select and discuss two potential accommodations and/or variations to treatment from Table 3 (attached). When would these accommodations be appropriate? Would these be short term alternatives or long term goals? If short term alternatives, what long term goals may be options? Assent is important within the context of Applied Behavior Analysis. Assent is the legal extension of consent and is a way for an individual that is receiving behavioral services, but cannot provide informed consent, to be able to legally agree to the services they are being provided. Assent withdrawal is important as this is the way those individuals can withdraw their agree to receive services. Assent and assent withdrawal are ongoing processes that a practitioner must try to continuously involve in clients treatment. Client's must be able to make the decisions to participate in services and it is important to assess client's vocal and non-vocal communications well as behaviors to assess assent. Two potential accommodations/variation treatment that I chose from table 3 are establishing a positive therapeutic rapport between the practitioner and learner and offering a break. I believe that establishing a positive therapeutic rapport between the practitioner and learner is appropriate and needed for every client. This is a long term goal that will help treatment conditions and can help with increasing participation and engagement. A break is appropriate when frustration or problem behavior is noticed while completing a task or if one needs to take a moment away from difficult tasks. In my
opinion, offering a break is a short term alternative that will hopefully turn long term, as the learner learns to request a break themselves instead of participating in problem behavior, become frustrated etcetera.
