8HIS 100 Module Two Activity Template: Primary and Secondary Sources Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Non-graded portion : List your historical research topic here: o The Creation of Earth Day Graded portion: Distinguish between primary and secondary sources. Primary sources are firsthand reports meaning a primary source would directly witness or been present during whichever event is being reported on. According to one of this week’s video resources titled Primary vs Secondary Sources , secondary sources are documents or “materials created after the actual date of the event being reported on” (HistoryVideos100, 2017). Simply put, secondary sources are not reporting on events which they were a direct witness to or that they were present for the event either. Additionally, many secondary sources often retrieve their information from primary sources. Explain why it is important to consult a variety of sources when conducting historical research. Include specific details and examples. Exploring many different sources when one is conducting historical research can be beneficial in many ways. One of these ways is that by consulting variety of sources the researcher is broadening their options when it comes to themes, topics, and the overall direction their research project will take. Maintaining an open mind in reference to their research and where in 1
fact they decide to attain it, may reduce or prevent our predisposition to bias. Finally, by utilizing various sources to support one’s research, this can help establish legitimacy and reputability in terms of who, what, when, where, or why. Identify one primary source that would help investigate your research question (include the title, author, and link to the source). Choose a current event related to the subject of your historical research question and explain how they are connected. Today more so than ever before can we see more and more people becoming increasingly more concerned and vigilant about all too real and pressing environmental concerns that face us all as a planet. We are witnessing global companies beginning to step up and acknowledge a responsibility they must set an example and shift towards more earth conscious business practices, and we are seeing the world start to recognize how mankind’s greed has led to overconsumption of non-renewable energy sources and as a result, are shifting are placing their attention on transitioning to a global wide focus on clean energy as a main source of power. All these factors are related to my question because without the initial inception of the first Earth Day, this heightened awareness and focus on these issues revolving around environmental conservation and consciousness would not be what they are.
