BA 644, Operations & Supply Chain Management – Fall 2023 Instructions for building your term paper / case study, first deliverable HOW TO BUILD YOUR CASE STUDY (Case Study I) This section describes your deliverables for the case study and guides you into how you should populate this formatted document with your own work. At this stage (week 4), you should start to build a 3-page document that will answer following set of questions: (1) Choose a company OR an industry of interest for your group. You could for instance choose the semiconductors manufacturing industry, or you can select a company to research, such as Intel, AMD, Lenovo, HP, Acer. Many of today’s industries use semiconductors. Examples of this could be a manufacturer for medical devices. The car manufacturing industry makes extensive use of semiconductors. The cell manufacturing companies (Motorola, Apple, among others) also make extensive use of semiconductor. (2) You should choose a company (or industry) for which you will be able to find references that will help you build your document. (3) The page limit is a minimum of 5 pages (for groups of 3-4), 4 pages (for groups of 2), and 3 pages for individual submissions including references, images, or tables . Each image, table must be captioned for explanation, and if they are not your own source, then you should properly cite and list the reference. (4) You should use references from magazines, blogs, company sites, and at least one technical paper. To search for technical papers, you may go to http://scholar.google.com , then use search criteria that will yield hits for the information of your interest. An example of such search follows. If we were looking to understand why uncertainty increases the probability of a disruption in supply chains for the semiconductors industry, the same example as in (1), then the following google scholar link will lead you to find several technical links of interest. https://scholar.google.com/scholar? hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C5&q=The+effect+of+uncertainty+on+supply+chain+disruptions+for+the+se miconductors+industry+&btnG= (5) Notice that the example above mentions the semiconductors industry. The same is valid for say, the food industry supply chain. The following link will show you several links of interest. https://scholar.google.com/scholar? hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C5&q=The+effect+of+uncertainty+on+supply+chain+disruptions+for+the+foo d+industry+&btnG= (6) Once you have chosen one technical paper, use its abstract and conclusions . Everything you need for your work at this moment is in the abstract (summary), and conclusions of the paper. You should not get involved in the details of this paper for the type of work that you are doing, especially if the article is highly prone towards the use of analytics or math – this is not the course for this kind of work. In what follows, an example of such information could be seen. I am highlighting the most relevant matter explained in this technical paper. The abstract will typically mention what was done, and the conclusions will describe how it was achieved. Please notice that this article is from a British journal, therefore you will see words spelled in British English.
“TITLE : Impact of COVID-19 on logistics systems and disruptions in food supply chain. Abstract : An outbreak of deadly COVID-19 virus has not only taken the lives of people but also severely crippled the economy. Due to strict lockdown, the manufacturing and logistics activities have been suspended, and it has affected the demand and supply of various products as a result of restrictions imposed on shopkeepers and retailers. Impacts of COVID-19 are observed ubiquitously in every type of units from different sectors. In this study, a simulation model of the public distribution system (PDS) network is developed with three different scenarios to demonstrate disruptions in the food supply chain. Difficulties have been increased in matching supply and demand in a vast network of PDS because of changing scenarios with the growth of infected cases and recovery. This paper also highlights the importance of a resilient supply chain during a pandemic. Our proposed simulation model can help in developing a resilient and responsive food supply chain to match the varying demand, and then further assist in providing decision-making support for rerouting the vehicles as per travel restrictions in areas . Paper has been summarised with significant highlights and including future research scope for developing a more robust food supply chain network. Conclusion and future scope: Natural calamities, threatening diseases, or political issues are the key factors that cause supply chain disruptions as observed in the past. But the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic has been reported as an exceptional case that having a pernicious effect globally because of the suspension of almost all the manufacturing and logistics activities. In this paper, an action plan has been proposed to tackle pandemic-based disruptions for fulfilling the need of food grains, ingredients, medicine, PPE, and other essential items. A concept of the truck-drones synchronised delivery system has been described to reach out to the customer resided in high-rise buildings located in severely infected areas . Disruptions in the food grain supply chain of the PDS have also been studied that happened because of not functioning of source warehouse due to the dearth of labour and truck drivers in infected regions. Therefore, a simulated study is performed by designing three different scenarios of the PDS to show the impact of the pandemic and its reviving strategy. Result showed the integration of warehouses helps in achieving demand fulfilment from a backup warehouse during disruptions at an allotted warehouse. The focus of this paper is confined to investigate COVID-19 situations by emphasising essential activities of supply chain and logistics systems, especially in case of the public distribution network. In future studies, a detailed model of public distribution network and food supply chain can be developed by incorporating multiple factors and challenges. Furthermore, mathematical and statistical approaches can be adopted to deliver rigour-based analysis to capture issues of the food supply chain, manufacturing of essential items, and shortages of healthcare equipment as future scope for the researchers of this domain to combat the pandemic concerns.” (7) As it is mentioned in your syllabus, you should at this moment (weeks 4 – 6) build your product for CASE STUDY I, which only includes the topics on globalization, strategy, and capacity planning for this stage. By the way, Case Study I will be different to Case Study II. The latter will not be a continuation of the first. (8) As with the structure for the case study, we will use the following template: a. Give a brief description of the supply chain that you have chosen. Highlight the relevant facts and underline the key barriers and problems for the company/industry corresponding.
b. Describe what challenges/problems are faced and need to be changed. c. Explore trends in this industry that will drive the business model that you are considering to study. d. Define what are you looking for in the specific solution that you are proposing e. Specify (from the lectures and book readings) if you can find alternate paths of action for this chosen supply chain. f. Give a critique (always positively) on the possible success (or pitfalls) driven by this case study. This is merely your opinion, but it should be based on facts or strong assumptions that you propose. g. Build an abstract (you build this last) and place it before section (a). An abstract is a paragraph that describes in brief what you have found and written in the document. (9) You should submit the first deliverable with a minimum of 3 pages (if individually done), 3.5 pages if the group is of size 2, 4 pages if the group is of size 3, 5 pages if the group is of size 4, double space, 12dpi Arial font, one-inch margins, APA style , not including images, tables, or references (this is, images, tables, and references should go after the minimum of three pages) by or before the start 10/31/2023 . It should have the full structure proposed in (7), only focusing on those aspects related to globalization, supply chain strategy, and capacity planning . It should be a qualitative research document, though you can use data if it is relevant to your work. (10) I f your group size is of 1, i.e., you are working alone, then you are entitled to choose two out of the three topics for building your case, and you are also allowed to submit a document of a minimum of 2 pages, not including images, tables, and references. (11) The minimum number of references for your work is 5, out of which at least one should be of a technical nature (journal). Example company: A hypothetical company that produces medical devices a. Give a brief description of the supply chain that you have chosen. Highlight the relevant facts and underline the key barriers and problems for the company/industry corresponding. Section 2 of the following report will describe the supply chain structure. https://aspe.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/documents/e48047020834c0c34cf6baf08a9428 d0/PR-A328-2-medicaldevices.pdf b. Describe what challenges/problems are faced and need to be changed. Section 4 of the same document ( https://aspe.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/documents/e48047020834c0c34cf6baf08a942 8d0/PR-A328-2-medicaldevices.pdf ) will introduce the challenges that Covid-19 brought as an example. You could look for different challenges NOT related to disruptions. c. Explore trends in this industry that will drive the business model that you are considering to study on item (f). To talk about globalization, the following link ( https://blogs.worldbank.org/developmenttalk/four-reasons-why-globalized- production-helps-meet-demand-spikes-case-medical ) will give you ideas. Define what are you looking for in the specific solution that you are proposing. For example, if you are looking forward to implement Resilience as your strategy, then the following link could help you find information: (b) https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/operations/our-insights/the-resilience- imperative-for-medtech-supply-chains e. Specify (from the lectures and book readings) if you can find alternate paths of action for this chosen supply chain. Give a critique (always positively) on the possible success (or pitfalls) driven by this case study. This is merely your opinion, but it should be based on facts or strong assumptions that you propose. g. Build an abstract (you build this last) and place it before section (a). An abstract is a paragraph that describes in brief what you have written. For the technical paper, you could have used the following search criteria: https://scholar.google.com/scholar? hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C5&q=resilience+medical+devices+supply+chain&btnG= , and from there, you could select one paper of interest to our class (globalization, strategy, capacity planning), such as https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1478409222000280 , where the authors explore supply resilience through an equifinality lens to establish how buying organizations impacted differently by the same extreme event can strategize and all successfully secure supply. They also find multiple paths to supply resilience contingent on redundant capacity and local sourcing options at the pandemic's onset. Low redundancy combined with limited local sourcing options is associated with more diverse strategies and flexibility. The most notable strategy is spurring supplier innovation by fostering collaboration among actors in disparate industries. All the above-mentioned lines come from the abstract. In addition, in section 4.4.1. the authors describe the response strategies for buying organizations, i.e., Local versus global sourcing , Single versus multiple sourcing, Diversity of strategies to secure supply , and Regulatory instruments. They also show (section 4.4.2) the strategies for suppliers, namely: Increasing manufacturing capacity , adapting ventilators for manufacturing at scale , Proactively and managing risks . The authors also show different paths (used in different European countries) for achieving resilience (section 4.4.3). A paper on sustainability as a source of resilience ( strategies ) for this same supply chain follows: https://www.emerald.com/insight/content/doi/10.1108/SCM-10-2021-0463/full/html . Should your group want to choose a company from this sector, you must delve deeper and find different (more) articles to those that I have chosen for exemplification. I hope this guide could help you build your document to specifications. NOTE: You are allowed to use Generative AI tools to ask (prompt) for the STRUCTURE of the case study, as it relates to your specific study. For example, if you are considering the medical devices industry, then you could prompt the AI chatbot as follows: “write the structure for a case study that explains the topics
of globalization, global supply chain strategies, and global supply chain capacity planning.” Then, everything inside each section pertains to your own words. Once you have finished the writing, you could ask the chatbot to improve your English language . Just copy your text (if you are using a free version you may need to do this in several steps) and prompt the chatbot the following: “write in better English: YOUR COPIED TEXT ” and hit enter. Once you have finished your document, and only if you have used an AI chatbot, you have to DECLARE its use. You can use the following statement as an example : Declaration of Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process : During the preparation of this work the authors used the ChatGPT AI bot in order to improve English language readability of the narrative and to summarize large text in shorter versions. After using this tool/service, the authors reviewed and edited the content as needed and take full responsibility for the content of the publication.
