2 As a delve into my growth and development as a leader, I use my personal reflections, my impact on others, and their valuable feedback to be a leader my employees want to follow. Before I can answer “why others would follow me as their leader?” I ask myself “why would I follow someone as a leader?” I think it is very important to put myself in the shoes of my employees, keeping in mind that I too was in their position early on in my career. I would want my leader to understand where I am to help me get to where I want to be. This creates a sense of belonging and understanding for employees, giving me the ability as their leader to provide them valuable insights to help them be successful. I believe that others might follow me as their leader because I am committed to continuous growth and development. A great leader is always learning, well-rounded, and fosters an environment of encouragement. I lead with my heart and recognize my team as people with lives outside of work. My focus is on continued improvement on working conditions, training and recognition represents a genuine care for the well-being of my team. To motivate others enthusiastically, I emphasize a shared vision and purpose. Instead of handing out marching orders, I communicate the added value and benefits of the envisioned future state. Specifically for working conditions, I encourage and stress the importance and of having a work-life balance. I share how beneficial it is for personal growth as an employee to acquire new skills and learnings, and I encourage, acknowledge and recognize my team for their hard work. By Aligning individual goals with the collective vision, my team members are inspired to pursue these goals with passion and enthusiasm. In seeking feedback on my leadership, I asked a trusted colleague to provide an objective perspective for my greatest asset as a leader. The response provided was that I can communicate and connect with anyone, allowing my team to feel comfortable and safe coming to me with
3 anything. I agree with this feedback as I do truly care for my employees, and I want them to know I am here to support them. I’m empathetic and realistic with my team’s performance expectations. I understand life happens, I can’t expect perfection; and although I hold my team to a higher standard, they know that they can come to me with their questions or concerns.
