ISSC457 Week 3 Assignment Name: ________Miguel Ocasio_________________ Date: 01/21/2024_____________ Fill in your name above, put your full response below each question, save the file using the file naming convention: ISSC457_Week3_Assignment_LastName_FirstName.doc ” where LastName is your last name and FirstName is your first name, then return this document for grading. Upon completing lesson 3 reading, you should be able to provide information regarding the below question. Assignment Rubric ( 100 Points) Synthesis of Concepts 60 Writing Standards - APA format 20 Timeliness 20 1. List the three components that comprise a router’s architecture. Central Processing Unit (CPU): The CPU executes instructions and manages the overall operation of the router. In addition to processing data packets and routing decisions, it controls various router functions. RAM (Random Access Memory) and ROM (Read-Only Memory): Are two types of memory in a router. RAM stores data, routing tables, and operational info temporarily. For the router to start up, the ROM contains the firmware and bootstrap program. Interfaces: Connect routers to different networks, allowing devices to communicate with each other. Ports like Ethernet, WAN (Wide Area Network), and serial are common types of interfaces. Each interface is associated with a specific network protocol and plays an important role in how the router sends and receives data. 2. What are the basic functions of a router? A router is a multifaceted networking device. By analyzing destination IP addresses and determining optimal paths, it directs data packets between diverse networks. In this function, path information is stored in tables. Also, routers do Network Address Translation (NAT), which maps private local IP addresses to a single public IP address. Through firewalls, they filter incoming and outgoing traffic based on predefined rules. Routers can assign IP addresses to devices using DHCP and support Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) for secure data transmission. You can prioritize different types of traffic with Quality of Service (QoS). In addition, routers connect different networks, facilitate network monitoring and management, and direct and secure data flow in modern networks. 3. What is routing table poisoning? In network attacks, routing table poisoning targets routers and their routing tables. An attacker injects false or misleading information into a router's routing table. The goal is to misdirect network traffic by manipulating the routing decisions
ISSC457 Week 3 Assignment made by the router. An attacker can poison the routing table to reroute data packets to unauthorized destinations, intercept sensitive information, or disrupt normal network operations. It's often used in conjunction with other attacks to facilitate eavesdropping, man-in-the-middle attacks, or unauthorized access to networks. Using intrusion detection systems and cryptographic protocols, network administrators can make sure routing information is authentic to stop routing table poisoning.
