It's important to keep a chain of custody when handling evidence in legal proceedings, especially in forensic investigations. It's how evidence is collected, transferred, and handled from the moment it's collected until it's presented in court. To ensure the integrity and admissibility of evidence, an unbroken chain of custody is essential. It shows who had control over the evidence at each stage. It usually includes who collected, received, or transferred the evidence, when it was collected or received, and any observations or actions taken. Keeping a strict chain of custody protocol helps prevent tampering, contamination, and loss of evidence, which could compromise its reliability and credibility. Any break in the chain of custody could raise doubts about the authenticity or integrity of the evidence, leading to its exclusion from court. To make sure the chain of custody remains intact, law enforcement agencies, forensic laboratories, and other entities handling evidence must meticulously document every step. In addition to protecting people's rights, it upholds the principles of fairness and justice in the legal system.
