Introduction
What is a Human Resource (HR) plan? “At its core, an HR plan is a strategy that encompasses everything related to the people in an organization, from recruitment and compensation to performance and training. Like the way a business plan details a company’s objectives and how it plans to achieve its goals, an HR plan outlines everything an organization is doing to manage the people side of their business.” (“How to Build an HR Plan That Supports Your Company’s Growth,” 2023)
While also developing objectives which meet the needs and standards of the organization to recruit and maintain qualified applicants to expand an organization to continue to be successful and increase efficiency. Talent Acquisition Every great HR plan must begin somewhere and must cover all aspects of the organization such as hiring, managing, training, and letting employees go. Starting with a Manual or Employee handbook. This approach documents the policies and procedures that need to be followed by employees and sets an expectation from the beginning for all employees. This manual should include various policies, expectations, work requirements, leave of absence policies, compensation and benefits, and proper attire for the workplace. Informing employees of
this from the start aids in the ability for them to be successful from the start and maintain growth in a positive way. Although these policies can vary from business to business or organization to organization, primarily a great starting point is including the mission and vision statement for the
organization or business. Moving forward, you want to acquire a clear and effective onboarding method to ensure the foundation can be built on. Onboarding may be one of the most important steps in retention

due to this allowing the newly hired employees to feel as if they are one with the organization and not an outsider. There are different strategies to onboarding but effectively providing the employee with a description of their job responsibilities, a chart to outline the organization of the
business, potential equipment needed for their workload, and begin to introduce them to other employees who can be of assistance or great knowledge to them while learning the material. Performance management is a key touching point in the new world as younger generations begin to enter the work field. The younger generations depend more on validation and feedback for doing the right thing efficiently. Being transparent with these employees as well
as others is an effective method to retention making sure all employees are recognized for their actions and are not going unnoticed. “Most people want to grow, learn new skills, become more well-rounded and advance their careers. It’s up to employers to create those opportunities.” (“How to Build an HR Plan That Supports Your Company’s Growth,” 2023)
Employee Engagement and Retention
Engagement and Retention rates within the United States are quietly decreasing and creating a scare for organizations and businesses across the country. The engagement and retention for a company is the dedication and commitment an employee has to their organization or business. (
Pellikaan, M. (2022, December 5).
To maintain and increase the engagement and retention of employees there are multiple strategies that could be or need to be implemented within an organization. As the country continues so do the inflation rates, higher wages and salaries can be a great starting point. Offering competitive salaries to other companies while also offering benefits and other perks can
lead to retention. While also the country has in the past dealt with a medical pandemic which

financially hurt a lot of families and businesses. This forced a lot of families to quit their jobs and
watch over family and children inside the comfort of their homes. Providing an alternative whether that be a work from home position or flexible scheduling to allow families to still provide for their children without having to rely on a single income. Which can also look like a work and home life balance. Promoting this allows a more family-oriented approach to show appreciation to the employees and that they care about their personal life and there is more to life
than working and making money. Although this is important, hard work and loyalty to the business allows them more flexibility. Learning/Development/Total Rewards
As a Director of Human Resources, you are “the guy/gal” who is responsible for all positive and negative situations whether you are part of them or notified of them. But you are also responsible for providing opportunities to attract and retain qualified talent, while also developing a strategy to reward employees who remain loyal and dedicated to the company. Developing a strategy or policy to recognize and reward employees can lead to more effective and efficient production which leads to more profit. “Employees who feel appropriately recognized and rewarded by workplaces are much easier to retain long term, but studies also show those employees will work harder and be more productive.” (Crail, C. (2023, July 13)
However, there are multiple types of rewarding an employee. Most people think financially they should be rewarded, but public recognition goes a long way, showing the employee their work is appreciated and valued to make the organization better. Therefore, recognition, financial rewards and benefit perks can be great places to start showing appreciation. Time off can be just as valuable as financial compensation. By implementing this policy, you create a culture where employees want to work and call their “second” family. Loyalty and dedication because of

appreciation leads to strong and effective businesses. “Developing a great company culture may involve implementing many of the retention strategies detailed in this list. These efforts might include rewarding your employees not just for success but for effort, creating a meaningful mission for your company and involving your employees in creative decision making about the present and future of your organization’s mission.” (Crail, C. (2023, July 13)
