DAT 260 Module Two Assignment Template SWOT Analysis Worksheet: Moving Your Organization to the Cloud Perform a SWOT analysis on moving your organization to the cloud. Each quadrant must contain between four and six items. Complete the template by replacing the bracketed text with your responses. Strengths Weaknesses Agility – A business can scale it’s needs up or down dependent on current business. Long term planning is not as much of a roadblock to changes. An increase in business doesn’t require an overhaul to expand systems. Now it can be provided by increasing usage to the cloud. Cost Optimization – Without the need to pay for on-site servers or off-site data centers this frees up capital for expansion projects. Geographically Diverse – Without being tied to a home office any employee with an internet connection can log in to work. This also allows a wider hiring pool. Increased collaboration – Using a cloud-based environment allows employees instant access to collaborate. No more waiting for a conference room. Downtime – Any problem with the server affects everyone. Any instance of lost connection for an employee or the data servers equals lost time for the company. Limited control – Public clouds although lower in cost also come with less control over the services and applications unless the company enters a separate license agreement for additional control Locked in to a vendor – Utilizing a cloud service provider locks the company in to a contract for a specified amount of time. Although the business can increase or decrease the usage they are locked to the vendor unless they pay to switch which would also include migrating data again. Increased security risks - access over the internet comes with additional security threats. Inadequate security can lead to leaks or breaches of data. Duplication of processes. Opportunities Threats Data backup – Cloud based technologies back-up data. On premise servers if attacked with ransomware are in danger of data loss. Ease of deployment Ability to innovate faster – cloud infrastructure allows a low- cost application development venue. Eliminate obsolete applications – Applications that no longer fit business needs can be removed or replaced more easily. Choosing the wrong cloud provider Compatibility – applications within the cloud might utilize more bandwidth than others causing lag and delays for users. Self Service modeling allows unauthorized use. – Self service applications for consumers are more at risk for unauthorized usage. Data governance compliance – Understanding compliance to data regulatory bodies and how it affects cloud-based models differently than on-site. Having effective policies in place to
guide employees is essential.
