Brenda Martinez-Tamez The 5 Most Important Skills for Healthcare Leaders Article Review The 5 Most Important Skills for Healthcare Leaders. (2020, April 16). Retrieved March 20, 2021, from https://www.peoplefluent.com/blog/insights/5-most-important-skills-healthcare- leaders/ The article “The 5 Most Important Skills for Healthcare Leaders” discusses the skills that are necessary for a healthcare leader to efficiently guide their teams and patients towards success and well-being. They address clinical, business, and interpersonal skills as highly important skills that a healthcare leader should have, and dive deeper into five more skills that should be developed throughout the organization. The skills mentioned are empathy, communication, strategic decision-making, self-awareness, and patient-orientation. The article achieves its purpose of offering recommendations to healthcare professionals that may improve their performance and patient satisfaction. However, it does a mediocre job of tying back each point to healthcare organizations and relating them to the issues we are currently facing globally in healthcare facilities. With the current pandemic, healthcare faces many unprecedented challenges, and the skills recommended by the article could provide information that could help ease those struggles. Operational leadership is necessary in an environment that seeks to maximize results by working with diverse teams in which each member has a different skillset. While I believe the title is a bit misleading since there are no true “most important” skills, I think it did a good job of explaining more skills that are often overlooked yet. These skills were thoroughly defined and they explained the impact of each one, just not specifically in a healthcare environment. It needs more examples in a healthcare setting, instead of giving vague situations that can apply to a
Brenda Martinez-Tamez The 5 Most Important Skills for Healthcare Leaders leader in any profession. The article was evidence-based and strayed from fear-mongering narratives and manipulation tactics that are often seen in news articles, especially ones pertaining to healthcare. In fact, they included multiple studies that related to the article and linked the sources directly. The process used to identify the skills that they recommended included an employee engagement strategy implemented by Temple Health Hospital. The fact that they went into detail about where they got their information from is important- this needs to be expected of every article, since misinformation in the media is so common. The actual content of the article was incredibly valuable to healthcare organizations. The ideas expressed were unique and addressed the relationship between employees and the relationship between organizations and their patients. Most healthcare professionals have training in science and business, but not necessarily in communication and self-awareness. All people have different levels of these characteristics based on their life experiences, but it is not usually prioritized in medical training settings. A healthcare professional can have excellent skills in science and data, but if they are not able to communicate effectively, it will not bring the team success. Interpersonal skills should be discussed more in order to raise awareness to their importance. A large part of being a healthcare professional means to be working in teams- communication and empathy are necessary for these teams to exemplify the rest of their skills. The article also included the patient in the conversation, which is important when the goal is patient-centered healthcare. It reminds the reader that the patient is always the priority, and considers empathy as a way to connect with them and understand their needs. In an industry in which employees can become easily desensitized to the health concerns of others, it is an important reminder to healthcare workers to stay in touch with their emotions and recognize the emotions of others.

Brenda Martinez-Tamez The 5 Most Important Skills for Healthcare Leaders While I am not currently employed in a healthcare facility, I believe that each of these are qualities for a good leader. At my job at Disney, I have to use each of these skills daily since there is a strong emphasis on customer service. A customer service-based approach to healthcare will lead to success, because by giving a patient what they need, their results will be more effective. Interpersonal skills are also required in healthcare settings since they depend so strongly on teamwork and collaboration. This article is very informative on what makes a great leader, but needs more healthcare-specific examples of each skill for the reader to see the direct impact and benefits of each one. That being said, I do believe that each one mentioned is valid and should be expected more from healthcare professionals, especially at a time in which healthcare is being impacted by unprecedented challenges.
