Section 1: Planning Provide an overview of the topic you have selected. Why have you chosen this topic? (50-100 words) Social media – has it improved our social connection or damaged it? How can we use it properly without allowing it to replace physical human connections? The topic was chosen since it is a controversial circumstance these days. Also, it helps raising various perspectives that can take into consideration. Which key ideas about this topic do you want to present to your audiences? Why? (100- 200 words) Key ideas: Social network affects our lives. List out the advantages and disadvantages of social media in communication. The solution to balance the use of social network. With three main ideas, it is clear to present the impact of social network on people lives in both negative and positive ways, also point out how to take advantage of the positive side while reduce the negatives. Write a topic statement and question for use in your presentation and debates. (100- 200 words) Topic statement: The future of social relation will rely much on social network since it allows people to build relationship and reconnect easier. However, it cannot foster deep relationships of value. The objectives of the talk are to educate about social media usage and let audiences understand how to use it properly. Furthermore, through the workshop, people will be able to aware the impact of social media on their relationship. Question: How does social network affect our lives? Social media’s infiltration into the lives of internet users has been on the rise. The latest figures show that there are expected to be 3.96 billion social media users worldwide in 2022—a 4.8 percent increase from a year ago. It is also 1.1 billion more than the number of social users in 2017, which represents a whopping 38.5 percent jump in just six years. The average annual growth rate over this period is 6.7 percent. Going forward, while the number of social media users will continue to increase, growth is expected to plateau. The average annual growth rate from 2023 to 2025 is forecast at 3.7 percent. Despite the slowdown, it’s clear that social media will continue to be a part of consumers’ daily lives, with smartphones and mobile devices as the main driving force. As it stands, social media statistics show that more than nine in ten (91 percent) social media users use mobile devices to access social networks. Companies use the platform to find and engage with customers, drive sales through advertising and promotion, gauge consumer trends, and offer customer service or support. Social media's role in helping businesses is significant. It facilitates communication with customers, enabling the melding of social interactions on e-commerce sites. Its ability to collect information helps focus on marketing efforts and market research. It helps in promoting products and services, as it enables the distribution of targeted, timely, and exclusive sales and coupons to would-be customers. Further, social media can help in building customer relationships through loyalty programs linked to social media. For example, bringing humour into conversations and discussions will do more than only ease up a mood in a room or break the ice. Laughter helps people relax and a relaxed atmosphere will assist in making people feel safe and comfortable as well as learning from people with a similar personality. People will also become more likely to receive and respond to ideas and information. How can you use storytelling to get your idea or point across? Include an example. 200- 300 words Storytelling is the art of telling a story. Sharing stories is virtually as old as language itself. As long as people have been able to communicate, we have shared stories and tales in order to convey our knowledge, morals, and history. I will do as steps below: Building the script Understand your readers Building a story The first important thing is always to understand the reader. You have to grasp what they want, what they do, then you can build up a story that stimulates their interests. More in discovering your readers. In a sense, GoPro wants their customer to think it, see it and do it. They are daring their customer to live the present and to capture all those memories with their GoPro. The company is launching a Periscope integration to its HERO4 cameras, which authorize people around the world to have access to someone else's memories and rely on and want to do the same, soon. When used properly, humour is a powerful tool in any speaker’s arsenal, and it can have tremendous benefits: It creates a bond with the audience A speaker who uses humour well comes across as more human, more likeable. This puts an audience at ease and makes people more receptive to your ideas. It energizes people and keeps them engaged When we laugh, there is a lot that goes on inside our body. (200- 300 words) It seems for every advantage there is a potential disadvantage such as: posting contact info can bring opportunities (or solicitors) posting about your life can attract fans (or negative attention) posting about your interests can result in targeted content (is it invasive or helpful?) posting about your feelings can enforce bonds (or be perceived as oversharing, seen as inappropriate) With social media, the “public space” has been extended online and inversely, private space has become partially public. Research At times, a presenter may be able to learn about their audience by researching in the library or on the internet. Interviewing all members of the audience is often impossible or unreasonable. A possible alternative is to converse with a representative sample of the audience. A representative sample is a small subset of the audience that maintains the demographic proportions of the whole audience. For example, if speaking to a group that was 90% female, making sure that interviewees were also about 90% female would establish a representative sample. Section 2: Physical Audience All of the information in this section must be researched and completed with your physical audience in mind. Define your audience Where will you hold a presentation and debate session? Who will be involved? Audience will be young generation (18-24 years old) who are main user of social network. The presentation will be held at the university hall that students can easily attend and join. There will be a host and 2 guest speakers with different point of view in this situation to share. Why have you chosen this platform? This platform was chosen since it allows to easily access with target audience. Also, it would be a suitable way to convey the message to the audience. How will you communicate with this audience? Outline presentation strategies and communication methods you will use. Explain the purpose For the presenter hoping to achieve maximum participation, the best strategy would be to open a presentation with a brief overview of the structure and the topics that will be discussed. This not only emphasizes the points that your audience should remember from the get-go, but it also puts them at ease and increasing their comfortability with the presentation direction. Frame the goal By simply framing the purpose of an exercise as an exploration into a topic or a free-flowing discussion, a presenter can open the doors for a constructive conversation, capable of unleashing a variety of opinions and stimulating audience interests. Organisational or platform policies and procedures Organization or Platform Policy & Procedures 1. There are two teams, each consisting of two or three speakers. 2. Each team has two or three constructive speeches, and two to three rebuttal speeches. The affirmative gives the first constructive speech, and the rebuttals alternate: negative, affirmative, negative, affirmative. The affirmative has both the first and last speeches of the debate. 3. When worded as a proposition of policy, the topic requires the affirmative to support some specified action by some particular individual or group. The affirmative has the right to make any reasonable definition of each of the terms of the proposition. If the negative challenges the reasonableness of a definition by the affirmative, the judge must accept the definition of the team that shows better grounds for its interpretation of the term. 4. The affirmative must advocate everything required by the topic itself. No revision of position of a team is permitted during the debate. 5. He who asserts must prove. In order to establish an assertion, the team must support it with enough evidence and logic to convince an intelligent but previously uninformed person that it is more reasonable to believe the assertion than to disbelieve it. Facts must be accurate. Visual materials are permissible, and once introduced, they become available for the opponents' use if desired. 6. In the questioning period, the questioner may ask any fair, clear question that has a direct bearing on the debate. The questioner may use the period to build up any part of his own case, to tear down any part of his opposition's case, or to ascertain facts, such as the opposition's position on a certain issue, that can be used later in the debate. The questioner must confine himself to questions and not make statements, comments, or ask rhetorical questions. 7. Each speaker is questioned as soon as he concludes his constructive speech. The witness must answer the questions without consulting his colleagues. 8. No new constructive arguments may be introduced in the rebuttal period. The affirmative must, if possible, reply to the major negative arguments before the last rebuttal. 9. The trainer must base his decision entirely on the material presented, without regard for other material which he may happen to possess. 10. Any gains made outside of the established procedure are disallowed. Organisational or platform policies and procedures About this policy As members of the Australian Public Service (APS), we have certain responsibilities. The public relies on us to deliver government services impartially. We must always use common sense and judgement when using social media, along with the advice set out in this policy. Personal social media use When staff post in a personal capacity, it must be lawful. A reasonable person should not perceive it to be at any time : in breach of state, territory or federal laws affecting public confidence in the agency or the APS affecting a staff member’s ability to complete duties in an apolitical or impartial manner made on behalf of the agency or the Government. When using social media, it’s not acceptable to: protest policies the agency implements release sensitive, personal or confidential agency information post images or videos of staff members without their consent. This could include images of staff behaving in a way that is inconsistent with the APS Values or the Code post content relating to work that is, or perceived as, offensive, threatening, harassing or discriminatory. This includes posts about the APS, stakeholders, the agency or its staff, whether named or not engage in commentary that’s so harsh or extreme in its criticism or endorsement of the agency, the Australian Government or a Member of Parliament from any political party or their respective policies, that you can’t work, or gives the perception you can’t work professionally, efficiently or impartially. Social media at work You can use social media like Yammer and Microsoft Teams at work. It’s important these tools remain open and welcoming places for all staff. These tools have their own terms of use you should follow, along with associated usage policies , like this policy. You should contact your manager if you: are still unsure about your responsibilities when using social media are worried about your privacy or reputation due to social media posts find information online you think the agency needs to know about, such as a person needing help to access government services or inappropriate social media activity by other staff.
