Submission: The coursework should be submitted electronically. The link will be available via the module Blackboard site. There will be penalties for work handed in after 1:00pm , which could include the work being awarded a mark of zero, if it arrives 24 hours late or more. Please note that the academic teaching team are not empowered to give extensions. Students are asked to choose ONE skills development topic each semester (TWO in total) and submit a reflective report of 2,000 words (+/-10%- not including any appendices) reflecting on one of the skills development workshops that they have attended as part of this module. Workshop topics September – December – attend both; choose one for your report. Skills of Leadership Coaching & Mentoring Workshop topics January – April – attend all three; choose one for your report: Consultancy Skills Recruitment Interviewing & Unconscious Bias Disciplinary Handling See below for an explanation of how to go about writing this reflective report. SMC Assessment task i. Choose a skill from the SMC workshop module list in this briefing sheet; ii. Read the recommended reading – see page 7 of this briefing sheet. Page 2 of 8
iii. From your reading identify what you understand to be the processes underlying the skill being developed and write a summary of these. iv. Work out how your current skill set (pre attendance on the workshop) matches up with these processes – conduct a self-audit and/or ask a friend or colleague. (Sections iii & iv = 25%) v. Describe and evaluate your development of this skill on the reflective workshop you attended as part of the Skills of the Manager Consultant module. vi. In your description and evaluation of your activities on the workshop explain: what did you do in terms of preparation for putting your use of the skill into action for each activity? What were your intended strategy and objectives?. vii. What was the impact of yours and others’ behaviour on the progress/outcomes of the activities? viii. Find an additional opportunity to put your use of the skill into action; describe and evaluate the opportunity for using this skill, including the following: ix. What did you do in terms of preparation for putting your use of the skill into action? What were your intended strategy and objectives? Give a brief summary of outcomes. x. What was the impact of yours and others’ behaviour on the progress/outcomes of the activities? (Sections v - x = 50%) xi. Evaluation of your performance on the workshop (Section xi = 25%) in terms of the following: What you did well? What hindered successful outcomes? What you will do differently in future? Write up sections (i) – (xi) as above in report format with an abstract, contents page, introduction, conclusions, list of reading references. See Supplementary Reading on the Blackboard Site under Assessment Briefing for more on reflective report writing, if you are unsure. SMC Coursework: assessment marking criteria The mark you receive will be influenced by the following: Marking Criterion Has the task been carried out as specified in the briefing sheet? Is there a coherent explanation of the processes involved in using the chosen skill? Is there a summary of the exercises and role plays that took place on the workshop and a critical evaluation of the skills developed? Quality of the discussion: is the argument coherent and does it follow a logical structure? Has the Cite Them Right Harvard referencing system been used correctly? Use of correct spelling, punctuation and grammar? Structure of the Report: Title page : Include the word count, the coursework title, the University of Westminster, the date, your seminar leader name, the module code and title. Abstract : Include an Abstract, which in practice is the same as an Executive Summary. It should not be too long (200-300 words) and should concentrate on what you did and how it went as well as what you found out about your own skill levels. It is not the same as an Page 4 of 8
Introduction. An Abstract stands alone and should include a brief summary of the findings of the report. Table of content : Include a table of content at the beginning of your report with page numbers. Introduction : A short introduction should introduce the whole report and not just the topic. i.e. introduce the purpose, the structure of the report (“say what you are going to say”) and the topic briefly. Report structure : This can vary from one paper to another. You will need to include several headings and / or subheadings to cover the outline structure given in this briefing sheet on page 2. Approximate proportions are as follows: Sections described above: iii & iv = 25%; v-x = 50%; xi = 25% Conclusion : Tie up your arguments in the conclusion; however this is not the place to include fresh evidence. Referencing : When you make direct quotes you should put them in inverted comas and give brief details of the source, including the page number e.g. (Rees and Porter, 2015, p.5). The full reference should appear in the list of references. You can cross check with examples from the library on how to lay out references. If the author/s’ names are part of the meaning of the sentence, leave the names out of the brackets. Report format : Insert page numbers in your report, use double spacing between the lines , use a bigger margin on the right, Use font Arial 12 or similar, use formal language, British English spelling. Word count: 2,000 words +/- 10% (excluding material on the title page, abstract, table of content, reference list at the end of the report and appendices). Page 5 of 8
