Final Report: Analytical Memo on Conducting Business in a Foreign Country
_______________________________________________________________________________
Objectives:
To demonstrate understanding of cultural variations
To demonstrate understanding of low and high text communication styles and the effect they have on cross-cultural communication
To demonstrate understanding of the ways to conduct business in other culture
To use secondary research to write an analytical report.
To document sources correctly using APA style for internal citations and References page
To create a written report using the direct order strategy, effective business writing style, and appropriate format.
The capstone project of this class is a four-six page (minimum 1,750 words) short report memo in which you analyze information about conducting business in a foreign country. Please review the instructions below and refer to them frequently as you work on this report.
Task As your CEO of XYZ, Inc., I am interested in doing business in a foreign country of your choice. I plan to visit this country next month, but I want to be well prepared and knowledgeable
about the country’s business culture.
For this assignment, choose a country in which you are most interested, and then research the culture and summarize what a U.S. female manager would need to know to conduct business successfully in that country. Consider the various dimensions of culture and business practices. For example, is the country a high or low context culture? On what do you base your conclusion? Are there ethics issues that I need to be aware of? You should summarize and present this information effectively. Do not rely on only one or two sources and do not plagiarize sources or your classmates—use your own words! Headings and bullets facilitate skimming and increase readability but avoid excessive bulleting, listing and numbering. Be sure you use citations even when paraphrasing resources. These sources MUST be cited in APA format BOTH in-text AND in a references page
. Failing to cite sources in-text AND in a references page will result in a failing grade, and possibly a “0” on the assignment.
Content
Since this is a solicited routine message, you should follow the direct order. Please refer to Chapter 12 for help on writing analytical reports. The report will include the following sections:
Students, Written Communication in Business
Page 2
1.
Introduction
: (to include problem, purpose, scope, sources and methods, conclusion). This should be no more than one-half page.
o
Introduce the report itself. Explain the problem that has led you to write this report (see “Context”). What is your purpose in writing this report? What sources and methods did you use? What is the scope of this report (see “Context” or “Data Analysis”)? What is the main conclusion you are supporting with this report? 2.
Data Analysis
Here is where you provide your information and
analyze its relationship to your report problem.
Who is your reader and what does she need to
know? 3.
Summary/Conclusions/Recommendations
o
Summary: Briefly recap the major ideas.
One way to do this is to review the major
headings in your paper.
o
Conclusions: A conclusion is a major
part of analysis problem. It is the logical interpretation of the information. It answers the question “What does all this mean?” Based on the information you have presented in the data section, what can you conclude about conducting business in the country you have chosen? o
Recommendations: As a result of your information and conclusions, what would you suggest for future? What should the reader do next? What should the reader not do?
4.
References:
You are to use information from 4-6 credible sources (not Wikipedia et al). Using APA documentation style, create a References page. Here you will list all sources used in the body of your paper. For credit, you must cite your sources correctly (both internally and on your Reference page – See Documentation below.). Documentation
Use APA documentation style for secondary sources. This includes (1) internal citations for all material and (2) complete bibliographic citations for your list of sources. You must document all outside information, regardless of whether you use direct quote, summary, or paraphrase. These sources must be cited in-text and in a references page to avoid plagiarism and to avoid receiving a “0” on this assignment.
Direct quotes: Do not use direct quotes unless they add great value. (“India uses the rupee” is not
a memorable statement.) Student writers tend to overuse direct quotes because they are not confident of their own writing style and because they want to avoid plagiarism. You should be confident in your writing. You should know how to avoid plagiarism. Include only one or two direct quotes at the maximum. You would need to document a quote because it is not your own idea.

Summarize material: a summary is a succinct restatement of a longer piece of writing. For example, if you read an entire article and stated the main idea, you would be writing a summary – and you would need to document this summary because it is not your own idea
.
Paraphrase material: a paraphrase is a much longer restatement of ideas. To paraphrase effectively, read and re-read the information. Put the original document aside and write the information in your own words. You would need to document this paraphrase because these ideas are not your own.
Format The final analytical memo report should be four to six pages, single-spaced, with graphic highlighting (such as headings and lists) to enhance readability. Use headings to organize your writing and to facilitate reading. The items above (#1, #2, and #3) may be your choice of headings or you may use the Action Topics you covered from Table 3.1. The assignment you are now reading is an appropriate report format to follow. Although you may have fewer headings and longer paragraphs, it uses a readable font, is single spaced, uses the correct memo heading and correct page headings. You are using APA to document your sources but you are not following the APA format for thesis, dissertations, or reports (do not double space; do not include a title page or running head.). Submission
You are to submit the Analytical Report through the Blackboard Assignment tool
Friday, December 1, 2023 no later than 11 p.m.
, naming your file LastnameFirstinitial_Report. Note the different submission day. ABSOLOUTELY NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Evaluation
This written report counts 25% of your final grade. Your final copy will be graded on content (what you say), mechanics and style (how you write), and format (how it looks).

Please follow carefully the Analytical Report Checklist attached below.
Attachment: Checklist/Rubric
Analytical Report Checklist/Rubric
Content: 60%
Introduction: This should be less than one page and, at a minimum, should include the problem, purpose, scope, sources and methods. Remember this introduces your paper, not your data analysis. You are providing your reader with an orientation. Use headings and combine information as appropriate. You have the option to include other introductory elements such as authorization, definitions or limitations. Using direct order, you should provide your main conclusion in this section
.
Data Analysis: This is where you present and analyze your information according to the criteria you have
chosen. It is the most important part of the paper. Do not merely present facts. Show how this information helped you determine your conclusion. How does this information relate to my request for conducting business in a foreign country?
Report Ending: A very brief summary is optional. However, this is an analytical report so your conclusions and recommendations are very important.
Length: The content (introduction, data analysis, and report ending) must
meet a minimum of at least 1,750 words
. This does not include graphics, wide margins, large type, excessive line spacing before and after headings, references, appendix, and other items not within the spirit of this requirement. Failure to meet this minimum will seriously and negatively affect your grade. You cannot earn higher than a C if you do not meet this minimum. You can, however, earn a lower grade than a C. Documentation and Format: 20%
Documentation
In-text Citation: Use APA parenthetical citation within your paper. Streamline your documentation so the reader won’t be interrupted by frequent in-text citations. Introduce your sources in the text. Every source you cite within your paper should have a complete citation on the References page.
References: Label this page as References (APA) and list all your sources in the correct format. This page also needs a correct page heading.
No In-text Citations will result in a minimum loss of 50% of the grade. If you fail to internally cite your sources, you are plagarizing. The same point loss will result if you do not also include a References page. No references page and no in-text citations will result in a “0” on the assignment.
Report Format
This will include type size and choice, line spacing, margins, page headings (see this assignment page heading), subject headings and anything that affects how your paper looks.
Use headings to facilitate skimming and improve readability.
Grammar, Mechanics and Style: 20%

Grammar: Review the Handbook in the Appendix or visit the Writing Center to ensure that language is “spoken English at the highest level.” In particular, look for the following.
o
Agreement (Use “it” when referring to a company or single entity.)
o
Parallelism
o
Passive Voice/Voice Shift
o
Sentence Structure (Avoid these errors: comma splice; fragment; fused/run-on sentences; indirect sentence starters, such as “it is” and “there are”)
o
Word Choice
Mechanics: o
Proof spelling, punctuation, and capitalization carefully. There should be no mechanical errors in this paper. Remember the UHCL Writing Center
has on-line services for distance ed students.
Check the Web site for information.
Style: Review chapters 4, 5, and 6.
o
Use the appropriate organizational strategy. In using the direct order, your primary conclusion should be in the introduction to the paper. o
Paragraphs are coherent with clear topic sentences and relevant detail. Avoid long paragraphs that intimidate the reader. o
Use effective business writing style that is clear and concise. Avoids wordiness. Plaigarism, including NOT citing your sources both in-text and in a references page, will result in a failing grade. AI generated work will not be accepted; using AI to create or write your work will result in a failing grade.
