Working Collaboratively with Professional Teams 2 Working Collaboratively with Professional Teams Speaking with one another to communicate information is known as verbal communication. Any verbal exchange that involves speaking is regarded as verbal communication. The most important aspects of verbal communication include posture, tone of voice, eye contact, and facial emotions. Chapter 5: the IEP Meeting Everyone smiles and speaks in a pleasant tone when introducing oneself at the start of the video. That indicates to me that they are glad to be there and that the meeting will go well. The Special Education instructor reviewed the student's current IEP at the beginning of the meeting so that everyone was aware of the situation before any adjustments were made. During the discussion, the family and the teachers were able to discuss ideas, opinions, and worries that they had in common. It was good to see that the student, rather than the parents, was questioned about how he loved school while watching the film. A teacher reassures the children that they all wanted the best for him and were there for him.
Working Collaboratively with Professional Teams 3 The young boy's shift to middle school the following year is covered in his IEP. I was unaware that the mother proposed altering the initial objective, and the special education teacher only advised aiming high. However, the mother expressed concern that her child could still achieve that goal despite his learning handicap. The special education instructor wanted to reduce the amount of time he spent receiving assistance from 45 minutes to 30 minutes. The parents were worried about when their son would accomplish the objectives, they had set for him. The parent representative from the school board concurs that the duration should remain 45 minutes, and that if adjustments are required in the future, it can be reevaluated. According to Friend and Cook (2017), "Nonverbal messages are generally more credible than verbal ones" (p. 55). For instance, the girls agreed with mom when she nodded in agreement over adding assistive technology to the IEP in the future. Overall, the meeting went well, and everyone agreed with the changes that were made and the text of the IEP. The only adjustments I would suggest making when conducting this conference via Google Meet or Zoom conference is to allot enough time for everyone to discuss the IEP. Additionally, copies of the IEPs for each participant in the meeting must be brought in for review.
