Non-Proctor Written Assignment Written Assignment - Unit 2 University of the People BUS 3303 – Entrepreneurship 1 Tapati.Choudhury , Instructor April 29 th , 2022 1
Non-Proctor Written Assignment According to Merriam=Webster, a hero is a courageous person, someone who has shown special qualities in doing something ( Merriam-Webster, n.d.). More traditionally, heroes are seen from war fields. But not only actually, as many come also from other areas of importance as those the “ Washington Post” listed ones are from. Especially in our days when our world faces challenges from all parts. So, as required by this assignment, I chose one of the new heroes from the journal, Kailash Satyarthi that I will research and find out why is he identified as a hero, and how his actions contribute to economic growth. Kailash Satyarthi is the first hero listed in the Washington Post article for his work in favor of children through his fights against child labor and slavery ( Melone, 2005, June 28), as well as the awareness he raises about the topic. According to his biography posted on the Nobel Prize website, Kailash Satyarthi was born on 11 th January 1954 in Vidisha, India, as Kailash Sharma. “Sharma” is the high caste name that he has gotten rid of early in his fight against inequality between the untouchable caste and the other privileged castes, or again a fight against inequality of chance between their children. He did so in protest against the persecution he has started facing from the so-called privileged castes because of his children defender activities. It is also probably a way for him to identify himself with what he believes to be the truth, as his new name “Satyarthi” means “truth”. The “TRUTH” that all children are born equal and should be seen and treated likely, and not that he be dressed well to go to school while the cobbler’s son has no other future than becoming a cobbler too. Kailash Satyarthi is really a true hero, not only for India and its kids, but also for all kids in the world, including the kids from West Africa I am from. For, he has at the cost of his own life, and the cost of his family and his collaborators’ lives stood for kids’ freedom from child labor and slavery in India and around the globe through his Grassroot child’s rights 2
Non-Proctor Written Assignment movement Bachpan Bachao Andolan (The Nobel Prize, n. d.) . He started his fight against child labor and slavery on his first day of school as a kid when he noticed that it is not all kids that go to school like him. Today through his activism in favor of children, India included laws against child labor and slavery in the country’s constitution and law. He has also raised awareness about the matter at the international level. Thanks to him and his collaborators' works, thousands of children have been educated in India and over. Education that helps those kids be prepared to work and earn good salaries that can help them live better once adults. Many of them would even create their own businesses and employ others. What contributes to their countries' economic growth, for, as well said by Munich University, I paraphrase, education helps have a solid foundation that leads to development that is the groundwork on which economic and social well-being are built ( Ilhan, 2001). In conclusion, Kailash Satyarthi simply deserves his title of a hero as well as the Nobel Prize was given to him in 2014, because of the work of fighting against child labor and slavery, all the kids he helped got educated, and his efforts to break the social and economic cleavage between the untouchable caste and the other privileged castes in India, as well as the fight against cleavage between poor and rich people in the world. Also, in educating children, he helps them be highly skilled for better jobs and a renewed mindset that lead to a better economy, effective development, and better social well-being.
