Week 2 Discussion EDAD 5483 Name Lecturer Date
As you look at your students' test scores and other data related to student achievement, you realize that you have staff members with significant needs for staff development. How do you prepare a goal for staff development and what will be your priorities? What staff development have you seen that was successful and what has yet to be well received? More importantly, how do you state your vision for personal and professional development as a goal? Preparing a goal for staff development will begin with identifying the specific needs of my staff members based on the data I will have collected on student achievement. This will involve analyzing test scores, looking at student work, and reviewing other data such as attendance or disciplinary records. From there, I will be able to identify specific areas where staff members need support, such as implementing a new curriculum or addressing a specific learning need of a student population. After I have identified the specific needs of my staff members, I will then use this information to develop a goal for staff development. I will ensure to come up with SMART goals given the information I will have collected. When it comes to priorities, I will take into account the immediate needs of my staff members as well as the long-term goals of the school. I must consider the impact of staff development on student learning and how the staff development aligns with the school's overall goals and vision. I will give the staff members some degree of choice and ownership over their professional development by allowing them to have input on the topics covered and a say in which professional development activities they participate in. Some staff development goals that could be successful include providing training on new curricula or instructional strategies and offering professional development opportunities that focus on meeting the unique needs of diverse student populations. Providing training on the use of technology in the classrooms and offering opportunities for teachers to collaborate and share best practices
are other staff development goals that could be successful. Staff development goals that may not be well received include; mandating training on topics that are not relevant to the staff members' needs, providing training that is not well- planned, and failing to provide sufficient resources or support for staff members to apply what they have learned in training. To state JRB Academy’s vision for personal and professional development as a goal, it is essential that I communicate the school's mission, values, and objectives and how the personal and professional development aligns with them. I will start by communicating the importance of professional development in improving student learning outcomes, and how it helps teachers to be more effective in their role. Then, I will communicate how the school will support personal and professional development, including available resources, professional development opportunities, and the evaluation process.
