Unit 2 Biodiversity This model simulates MacArthur & Wilson’s 1963 Island Biogeography Equilibrium paper. You can run virtual experiments manipulating the following: island size, distance from mainland, habitat type, and species types (e.g. birds, arthropods, etc.). Click on the link: http://virtualbiologylab.org/ModelsHTML5/IslandBiogeography/IslandBiogeography.html 1) Read the Background 2) Click on Tutorial to learn how the simulation works. 3) Click on Run Experiment. Pause it and click on Clear Islands to reset everything. Then, choose: a. A Habitat b. Island Distance should be at 10 km for both and 256 km for diameter for both. c. Choose a taxon- Reptiles OR mammals d. Leave Migration Rate and Mortality as is. e. Click the Play arrow and time it for 1 minute, click Pause and then To Data. i. Record your results in Table 1 Part 1 Taxon Reptiles___________________ Island 1 Island 2 Number of Species 8 9 Total Number of Individuals (Island Total) 29 31 Next, clear the island and run the experiment with all of the same parameters except move Island 1 away from the shore to 310 km. Island 1 Island 2 Number of Species 4 10 Total Number of Individuals (Island Total) 7 38 Questions: 1. Describe the impact of moving the island AND explain your results.the results increased cause we moved the island away from the shore
Part 2 1. Choose a different Habitat than Part 1. 2. Choose the taxon you did not do in Part 1(reptile OR mammal). 3. This time leave the rest as is and run the experiment for 1 minute and record results. Taxon Birds___________________ Island 1 Island 2 Number of Species 8 9 Total Number of Individuals (Island Total) 30 22 Then, for the second run, change the diameter of Island 1 to be 128 km. Run the experiment and record the results. Island 1 Island 2 Number of Species 10 8 Total Number of Individuals (Island Total) 28 20 Question 1. How did changing the size of the island affect your results when compared to the first run? Explain. It went down cause we decreased the size of the diameter
