Main Post : Sexuality: Explain the roles that biology, culture, socialization, and age may have in influencing sexual activity and sexual behaviors. Biology, culture, socialization, and age play an enormous part in sexual activity and sexual behavior. According to Broderick and Blewitt (2020), biology plays a huge role in this proves by the influence of the different reproductive organs between males and females. For instance, females have ovaries and adrenal glands, while males have testes. Gender differences is impact from the chromosomal differences which occurs five weeks after conception. The psychoanalytic view of adolescent sexual development by Sigmund Freud allows one to understand the sexual development from an infant through an adult. An infant can identify their gender as they become aware of their genitalia (Greydanus, Dickson, and Omar, 2022). However, has the child continue to grow into the teen years and going through puberty, one’s sex drive increases with the physiological changes. These young adolescents encounter new experiences with the urgency of sexual interest as they explore their own sexuality. Sexual fantasizing and masturbating are a form of development of sexual self-awareness. However, due to some religion or culture beliefs, some will experience conflict with being shameful or guilt with any association to sexual activities. According to Greydanus, Dickson, and Omar (2022), the development of an adolescent is influence highly by the stages of sexuality with the assistance of psychosocial and cognitive growth leading to maturation. As nowadays young adults participate with sexual activities and behavior more frequently which typically is individuals between twelve to twenty-four years of age. Statistically, young individuals are likely to have intercourse due to curiosity or peers’ engagement. Peers have shown to be a huge influence in which one is sexually active because of what their peers are doing. For instance, if one boy is active, his friends are likely to be active just due to the reason that they want to seem “cool” or “popular”. Although, social class, religion, ethnicity, culture, etc. can play a factor in an adolescents’ sexual life. Even though, it is normal for one’s sensation to increased, one must understand that it can lead to negative outcomes such as STDs, depression, pregnancies, and such. Greydanus, Dickson, and Omar (2022) emphasize on
the importance of the complicated aspects when sexual desire, arousal, behaviors, and sexual functioning is involved. (Broderick and Blewitt, 2020) Explain the influence of sexuality on identity and development with an illustrative example. According to Glover, Galliher, and Lamere (2009), sexual orientation is impact by the individuals’ personal, social, and cultural factors which allows that person to generate and examine their own sexual identity and development. An individuals’ personal experience and the social environment can influence on desire, behavior, and identity which constructs the individual’s sexual orientation and identity (Glover, Galliher, and Lamere, 2009). Recognizing the society’s influence is important for a person to able to choose their own identity which can be defined within the culture instead of their sexual orientation. Even though, one is shown to have solely control of their own lives and beliefs, one might come into conflict due to their cultural or religion beliefs which can impact their sexual identity and development. As many individuals might emphasize their sexual identity was discovered within the exploration and experience in relationships, others might include that their sexuality was established since birth based on their assigned gender. However, studies have shown that young females are more likely to develop self-identification than males. I have a friend who defined herself as a girl and her sexuality was bisexual meaning that she liked both girls and boys. Never seen her with a girl before just boys which made me wonder if she was saying that to attract girls or was just curious about girls. However, when we were in middle school, she did open once about crushing on a girl, but she had trouble approaching her plus she said if her mom ever found out she liked girls that she would get disowned as her daughter. It was sad to see the fear she had on her face just talking about the possibility of ever encountering that with her mother. I would ask her what made her think she was bisexual, but she never quite knew the answer. However, being Mexican, one was not allowed to be gay or bisexual because it was viewed as immoral behavior and a sin if you came from the religious family that we grew up in. She remained in the closet till about when she was around 16-17 years of age and when she told her mother, her mom took the news better than expected. Her mother emphasized that times are changing and so is one’s sexuality and sexual orientation. She did go on dating girls after coming out of the closet, but it wasn’t until she graduated from high school, she came into realization that she was just going through a phase. Shortly after graduating, she got together with a man and had a daughter of her own. This was an ultimate illustrative example of the influence of sexuality on identity and development because even though this girl had the ability to identify her own sexuality, her experience played an enormous role in establishing and exploring.
As for myself, my family played a huge role on my sexuality since I was born since I was only allowed to play with dolls and dress up in dresses. I grew up with two older brothers, so I was only aware of video games and cars. My mom would always tell me that I should be doing things with my girl cousins because I was acting like a boy too much. It was not necessarily that I was defining myself as a boy, but I also was not a girly girl either. I never questioned my sexuality, because I was attracted to boys, and I know I was a female since I was born. I just was not into what a typical girl would be into. When I was a middle school, I spend most of my free time playing video games with my brothers than what typical girls would do like makeup, do their hair, nails, etc. I also was not into the ”chisme” as my family would say, I tried to stay away from all the negative energy and drama. Still till this day I rather spend time with boys than with girls since I got use to that. Even though, I can conversate with females, I prefer communicate with males since I can relate more and have stuff to talk about like sports, games, or cars. References Broderick, P.
