Brooke Clanton BSC1005 Unit Cancer – Scientific Literacy Project Total points possible: 80/80 Let’s exercise our scientific literacy and reasoning skills to determine if you would buy a product that is marketed to you using science claims. Instructions: Work on this assignment independently. Please answer each question with complete sentences and proper grammar. Type your answers within this document. Leave the text and figures as is. 1) Look at this meme that was posted on Facebook. What is the claim of this meme? (2 pts) This source of a meme is trying to tell its audience that everyone and anyone is at risk of getting this cancer. Also labeling that 5g is an example of a leading factor to cancer since the radiation from our phones puts users at risk. Image 1 2) From the Cancer Unit, explain in detail the relationship between the cell cycle, cell cycle checkpoints, and cancer. (10 pts) Cancer is caused by changes to ones DNA and by uncontrollable division of cells. Gene mutations have the potential to cause cancer if left untreated they do this by either speeding up cell diction rates or obstructing the body’s natural defenses. There are three check points in the cell cycle which are the G1/S checkpoint, G2/M checkpoint, and Spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC). The first checkpoint process to divide the mutation and will look to see what cell can be divided and what cell cannot. The second helps with DNA replication. If the mutant cell reached the final phase while dividing uncontrollably the cancer begins to grow and reproduces fast. 1
Brooke Clanton BSC1005 Unit Cancer – Scientific Literacy Project Total points possible: 80/80 3) Below is a graph published in a peer-review primary source. Analyze the graph and list, in order of greatest to least, the top 3 risk in factors that could lead to cancer. (3 points) 1. Cigarette Smoking 2. Excess Body Weight 3. Alcohol READ about 5G. Wireless communication systems use radio frequencies to carry information through the air. Cellular networks operate on radio-frequency bands of the electromagnetic spectrum. The electromagnetic spectrum includes X-rays, Ultraviolet, Visible lights, microwaves, and radio waves (see Unit 4 Module 2 of your ebook for more information). The shorter the wavelengths, the more energy they have. For example, short-wavelength ultraviolet (UV) light has more energy than visible light. UV is a type of ionizing radiation and its energy can break chemical bonds and cause damage to cells. UV wavelengths range from 100 to 400 nanometers. 5G is the fifth-generation technology standard for broadband cellular networks. 5G uses millimeter wave frequencies from 30 to 300 gigahertz which are 10 to 100 times higher than the radio waves used by 4G cell signals and WiFi. 4G radio waves are on the order of centimeter wavelengths whereas 5G wavelengths vary between 1 and 10 millimeters. 5G wavelengths are shorter than the 4G wavelengths and therefore have more energy. 5G wavelengths are considered non-ionizing radiation. Brooke Clanton BSC1005 Unit Cancer – Scientific Literacy Project Total points possible: 80/80 4a) Find two reliable scientific sources about risk factors of cancer, cancer, and any relationship between 5G and cancer. List your two sources using Author (if present), Name of article, Date (if present), Name of website, and a URL link or a DOI: (5 pts) i. Citation 1: Date- September 28 of 2022 https://www.cancer.org.au/iheard/i-heard-that-the-new-5g-technology-can-cause- cancer-is-this-true ii. Citation 2: Name of Article- Understanding Cancer Risk Date- January 28,2022 https://www.cancer.net/navigating-cancer-care/prevention-and-healthy-living/ understanding-cancer-risk 4b) Identify if the source is primary or a secondary source. Justify why you consider these sources to be a primary or secondary reliable scientific source. (10 pts) i. Citation 1: This source is a primary source and seems to be reliable because it is up to date and is backed by doctors. Also, very up to date with new information. ii. Citation 2: This source is a primary source, it has very useful information and is reliable for this project. Very formative and gives out a lot of information with different kinds of cancers and risk leading facts to it so it can help you better understand the topic better. 3

Brooke Clanton BSC1005 Unit Cancer – Scientific Literacy Project Total points possible: 80/80 5) Organize the information you learned about 5G and cancer. Based on your course material, your research, the peer reviewed graph, and the statements you wrote in questions 2-5, what information did you find that supports the meme and/or what information did you discover that is against the meme. Place the information in the either “Evidence in favor of the claim” or “Evidence against the claim” in the following table (both sides need not be equal and at least 5 must be written). Use your own words. (15 pts) Write the claim from Q1: 5g leads to cancer. Evidence in favor of the claim Evidence against the claim Ones who use phones more daily may have higher glioma rates. Found no link between these two leading to brain cancer. Multiple epidemiological studies showed some correlation between amount of time used on mobile phones leading to cancer. In general, research showed no increase in cancer provided by normal uses of phones. Claims that technology gave people nausea, headaches, and eye problems. Not firm enough evidence saying that these are cancer symptoms. On the same chart as ultraviolet, x rays, and gamma rays which all can give radiation. It’s the lowest on the charts, meaning less damage/ Can affect us the most since we use our phones all the time and mostly sleep next to them. While some may fear this it hasn’t been proven that being next or on your phone gives you cancer. 4
Brooke Clanton BSC1005 Unit Cancer – Scientific Literacy Project Total points possible: 80/80 6) Interpret the evidence organized in the above table. Overall, what is the pattern of the evidence in relationship to the claim? (5 pts) I seem to have a good amount of pro and con evidence for my topic. Both sides are equally valid. 7) Based on your course work, research, and your analysis of the gathered evidence, do you believe the claim in the meme? Why or why not? In 3-4 sentences, justify your decision using scientific evidence. (15 pts) I do not believe in the claim nor the meme there’s no rock-hard evidence that 5g gives cancer. After reading my two picked websites most of the points swayed towards 5g not having any psychical effects on its users. 5
