Report
HEPATITIS A - USA (08): (CALIFORNIA) INFECTED FOOD HANDLER 1. What type of pathogen causes the disease in your report (i.e. bacteria, virus, etc.)? Hepatitis A is an RNA virus. 2. Is it contagious? Is it zoonotic? It is contagious. 3. Is it considered an emerging infectious disease?  No 4. Is it endemic to any particular regions of the world (where)? Hepatitis A is common in areas with limited access to clean water and inadequate sanitation. Parts of Africa and Asia are endemic areas, where most of the adults are infected and the children have become immune to hepatitis A. 5. What is the mode of transmission? Fecal-oral route: when contaminated feces from an infected person is somehow ingested by another person during close contact. 6. Summarize the ProMED post or the source article it's from in a few sentences.  Los Angeles County Department of Public Health was working with Panda Express to notify consumers of a possible hepatitis A exposure. The public health has identified the infection in a food handler that worked at a location in Lancaster, CA. Although no additional cases have been identified, the public health recommended customers that had consumed food or drinks from this location to get the hepatitis A vaccine. Hepatitis A is a liver infection cause by the virus and is highly contagious. Symptoms may include fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark colored urine, and jaundice. Vaccination can prevent infection and there is no specific antiviral treatment. 7. Define at least one unfamiliar term you came across in your reading. “Immune globulin (IG)” – contains antibodies that help strengthen the immune system, usually given intravenous. It is typically recommended for older adults and people with weakened immune systems to receive immune globulin.
