HLTSTE004: Assessment 1 What you have to do This assessment requires you to have the knowledge to apply procedures for handling, storing and maintaining sterile stock. You may need to refer back to your learning resource. 1. Name 4 proper storage conditions required for the sterile stock proper storage conditions require: - That the area should be clean and dust free - All sterile stock should be stored on shelving, cupboards, drawers or containers - Walls should be impervious making cleaning easier - Temperature and humidity should be within a controlled range 2. Name 4 quality checks you perform prior to issuing items to customers? - Correctly check documentation for orders of stock and that all perimeters have been met - Check sterility of stock ensuring it has not been compromised and all perimeters have been met - Check stock is in date - The trolley that is used for transport should be clean and dust free before using 3. Name three Environmental factors that can compromise sterile stock Students answers may include but not limited to Environmental factors that can compromise stock sterility are: - The absence of temperature and humidity control - The contagion of insects and vermin - Sunlight and ultraviolet light exposure 4. The sterile stock room is situated in a dedicated storage area why? Having qualified staff working in this area and having limited access decreases exposure of sterile stock to contamination it also makes delivery of sterile stock to theatre easily being in such close proximity. 5. What does sterile stock rotation mean? sterile stock rotation is very important. First in first out helps control inventory. The older stock is picked up and used first with the most recent stock placed at the back, otherwise older stock could be continually pushed to the back and not get used. 6. Items requiring dust bagging should not be bagged until item have cooled completely Why? sterile packages have to be cooled off before dust bagging as condensation causes moisture which allows the invasion of micro-organisms thus compromising sterility 7. Care must be taken to ensure that stock is not tightly packed into Storage containers or wrapped with elastic bands why? if sterile items are packed too tightly they can become compromised and they would then be considered unsterile and need to be reprocessed. Single use items would need to be disgarded, thrown away and documented 8. Write a short paragraph to the following question: Describe in your view an ideal sterile stock room? Students answers may include some of these but not limited to: An ideal sterile stock room would be a designated room off the packing area and ideally direct access to theatre. All surfaces should be smooth, non porous and easy to clean. Lighting should be recessed into the ceiling with no windows to prevent sun exposure and ultaviolet light. The room should be temperature and humidity controlled with adequate ventilation. Shelving which would allow enough space for storing all sterile products, they would need to be 10 inches off the floor, 18 inches from the ceiling and 2 inches away from all the outside walls. Ideally all shelving would be on rollers for eaasy accessibility. There should be signs outside of the room for limited access by staff to reduce movement coming in or out. 9. What are the correct procedures to follow for non- conforming stock? non conforming single use items should be disgarded and documented. All non conforming reusable items should be reprocessed and documented 10. What is the correct temperature required in the sterile storage area? 2 LA021108, Assessment 1; HLTSE004, Ed1 © New South Wales Technical and Further Education Commission, 2016 (TAFE NSW – WSI), Archive version 1, May 2016
The correct temperature for a sterile stock stoarge area is between 18- 25 degrees celsius 11. What is the correct relative humidity for the sterile storage area? the correct humidity is between 35-70 degrees celsius 12. Delivery trolley’s or containers are used for issue of sterile items to other areas, once trolleys have been emptied what procedure should be follow with the trolley All containers and trolleys must be cleaned before storing. If your facility does not have a mechanical cleaner, the trollets or containers must be handwashed with a neutral detergent and throuoghly dried being for stored for the next use. 13. What is the correct thing to do with transport trolleys that are not functioning properly? All transport equipment that is not working properly needs to be reported, tagged and then sent out to be repaired. 14. Name two things that should be included in the recall protocols Two things to be written in the recall protocols should include: - criteria for issuing a recall notice - Designated person for issuing the recall notice 15. Sterile packs should be rejected if : name three things that would compromise the sterility of sterile stock Three things that would compromise sterile stock would be: - The package is broken, damaged or torn - The seal is not intact - The label information is incomplete or incorrect 16. Answer the following statements true or false Nail polish and artificial nails should not be worn as this may contribute to the transmission of certain healthcare associated microorganisms TRUE It is not important to wash your hands prior to entering the sterile stock area. FALSE Staff must understand the correct handling techniques as well as being able to identify non-conforming stock. TRUE Sterile stock can be stored on the floor if there is nowhere else to put it FALSE 17. Why are dust covers used? The use of polyethylene dust covers are to protect all items to maintain sterility while being stored or transited. This stops the danger of entrapment of contaminants 18. What must we look for when handling sterile stock form external suppliers Any stock received from external suppliers should be checked and inspected for any damage to the outside or its contents. Any items that are damaged should be rejected if compromised in any way and reported to the manager and documented following policies 19. When distributing orders of sterile stock why is it important to accurately keep records? Accurate record keeping is very important. If incidents occur it enables traceability, if all documentation is accurate it makes for easy access or stock control 20. Why is it important to have restricted access to the sterile stock room? limited access decreases air borne microbial contaminents which puts sterile stock at risk Checklist I have: answered all questions in the space provided saved my answers in this document.
