Proper microbiological techniques include the safe transport and disposal of cultures along with the correct use of personal safety equipment such as gloves and safety goggles. 2. Define  secondary containment . Deals with protecting the outside environment from exposure to infectious organisms. It depends principally on the design of the laboratory and the availability of equipment, laboratory workers should maintain the labs safety features, such as keeping a closed door closed or leaving an exhaust fan on. 3. How should one dress prior to microbiology lab? Specifically, what type of shoes should be worn and what types of clothing elements should be avoided? Always wear closed toe shoes because open toed shoes can lead to injuries and potential liquids spilling. Avoid clothing with baggy sleeves that could catch fire. Dress with closed toe shoes, hair up, and sleeves that are tight fit to your arms. 4. What 3 pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE) should be worn while working in the microbiology lab? Always wear a lab coat, gloves, and safety goggles. The lab coat should only be worn in the lab.
5. Where should you dispose of plastic, non-reusable items such as gloves, petri dishes, and plastic inoculating loops? You dispose of them in the biohazard container. Reusable supplies such as culture test tubes and glass pipettes should have all labels removed before being placed in a rack or container designated for autoclaving.   6. How should you clean up a spill involving live microorganisms? Specifically, how should the spill be covered, how many minutes does the disinfectant need to be in contact with the spill material, and where should spill materials be disposed of? In the event of a spill, notify your instructor and your lab partners immediately. With your instructor’s approval, cover the spill with paper towels and saturate the towels with disinfectant. After 15 to 20 minutes, carefully wipe the spill up and discard the paper towels into the biohazard container for autoclaving. General microbiology safety video: 7. You should use enough hand sanitizer to wet both hands completely. About a dime to a quarter size of hand sanitizer. You should rub it until your hands or dry, so about 20 seconds.
