Mystery Dog Project Lost Dog A1 that Showed up on My Doorstep Tommy D Microbiology – BIO 2104 Today
On Saturday, February 4 th , 2023, Lost Dog A1 showed up on my doorstep. To figure out where this dog belongs: I need to uncover what breed this dog is. Any other distinctive characteristics it has. Compare against outside resources to find similar dogs reported missing. Project Aims
Observational & Morphological Data Image 1 Lost Dog A1 has mostly white fur, with some dirty, gray areas about the underbelly. Fur is tufted and 10 - 20 inches in length. Dog appears more like a floor mop than living animal. Image 2 Lost Dog A1 stands 29 inches tall, weighs 87 lbs., has dark black nose, 4 legs, sharp teeth that it isn’t afraid to use, very smelly breath, and dark brown eyes (only visible when you move away the 5 lbs. of fur covering them). The dog has female external genitalia and enlarged nipples.

Deeper Physical Examination Results (analogous to your staining results) Image 3 Lost Dog A1 would always turn to look at me whenever I would call out the words “dust mop”. Image 4 Bathing Lost Dog A1 created a bathtub full of dark, dingy, dirty water, and the dog turned from a dark gray color to a bright white color. After Before Image 5 The dog’s teeth were stained with plaque and tartar, and gums showed inflammation upon oral examination. Gums would bleed with gentle probing.
Image 6 Occult fecal blood testing returned a positive result, indicating that this dog has unexpected blood in its feces. Hematological and Microbiological Test Results (analogous to your Biochemical results) Image 7 A blood draw revealed leukopenia (low WBCs), Image 8 After shaving the front, right paw I could observe 1.2 inches long nails and inflammation. A swab of the inflamed area confirmed infection.
Lost Dog A1 Test/Examination Results Appearance Fur initially dirty but turned white after bathing, very long (up to 20”), tufted. Looks more like walking cleaning appliance than dog. Behavioral observations Scared, temperamental—as evident from attempts to bite me—seems to respond to name “Dust mop”. Body observations 29” tall at shoulder, 87 lbs., four legs, a tail, female genitalia, and enlarged nipples. Oral exam Sharp canine teeth, smelly breath, visible plague, tartar, gingivitis, bleeding gums. Occult fecal blood test Test was positive indicating presence of unexplained blood in feces. Whole WBC count Blood draw and whole WBC count returned evidence of leukopenia. Paw examination and swab Nails were 1.2” long, and medial toenail was inflamed. Swab and culturing confirmed infection in toe nail. Results of all examinations

Conclusions Lost Dog A1 presumably named Dust Mop. Body exam corroborates Dust Mop is Canis familiaris (Wikipedia.org, 2023) Female Has had puppies in the past Seems to be a Puli, per American Kennel Club ( www.akc.org , 2023). Oral, fecal, and pedal examinations All confirmed a state of dys-health and possible neglect. Owners may not be searching for this animal. May be a feral or stray dog. No evidence of: Social media postings (Facegram, DowntheStreet, Craigsstuff, Instablr, Tumblbook, and Tiktak) Open cases with local police precincts Missing dog posters around town.
Self-Reflection This was a challenging and difficult situation for me, but even more for poor Dust Mop. Dust Mop is clearly an unhealthy animal without sufficient shelter or care. It has been heartbreaking to see the state of disarray of Dust Mop, but we have become well acquainted and enjoy each other’s company. I will continue looking for any indications of where Dust Mop came from in order to ascertain how it got to be in this condition and at my house. I learned a lot about canine veterinary medicine and dog care. Bathing a puli is a pain in the a$$. Don’t do a dental exam on a fully conscious and frightened dog. I guess I have a new pet in the household now.
