Biol 1102-A Assignment 5: Individual Assignment on Human Health and the Environment (10 Points) Due via D2L, Monday, November 27, 2023 (11:59PM) This individual assignment addresses several topics involving the environment and human health, including issues involving environmental justice, through examining information available on various factors that can contribute to health risks and outcomes. You can use as much space as needed in order to have complete responses. 1. County Health Rankings for Georgia (5 points) . The County Health Rankings website ( https://www.countyhealthrankings.org/ ), developed by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, provides information drawing on multiple factors on the relative health rankings (within a state) of counties. Based on the State Rankings Data and Reports section of the website, where you can find the report for Georgia for 2022, as well as the 2023 National Findings Report, address the following questions: a. Indicate the two health factors relating to the physical environment that are part of the process for determining the overall county health rankings, and identify the measures incorporated into each factor. b. Complete the following table for the county health rankings (i.e., an individual number rank) for Columbia and Richmond Counties in Georgia, for both factors and outcomes. County Rank Columbia Richmond Health Factors Health Outcomes c. Based on other content covered in this course, identify one specific step that could be taken by the lower ranking county to improve a health factor relating to some aspect of the environment.
Biol 1102-A, Assignment 5, p. 2 2. Environmental Justice Index (5 points) . The CDC Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry has developed the Environmental Justice Index tool ( https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/placeandhealth/eji/index.html ), which uses data from multiple federal agencies to rank cumulative impacts of environmental injustices on health for all census tracts in the U.S. The index considers 36 different environmental, social, and health factors. For this question, you will compile information available for two census tracts, one each in Columbia and Richmond County, GA, as indicated below. Once you are at the EJI Explorer page, you can select the state, and then select either Columbia County or Richmond County, which will zoom in on the counties. Note that the map gives you further opportunities to zoom in or out. Once you are zoomed in, you can click on any particular area in one of the counties, which will then provide data for that particular census tract. As noted on the website, the tool scores census tracts using a percentile ranking system, as follows: “The Environmental Justice Index (EJI) scores census tracts using a percentile ranking which represents the proportion of tracts that experience cumulative impacts of environmental burden and injustice equal to or lower than a tract of interest. For example, an EJI ranking of 0.85 signifies that 85% of tracts in the nation likely experience less severe cumulative impacts on health and well-being than the tract of interest, and that 15% or tracts in the nation likely experience more severe cumulative impacts from environmental burden.” (CDC, Environmental Justice Index Explorer) You will use the tool to address the following questions. a. Once zoomed in on Columbia County or Richmond County, click on any particular census tract of your interest, one for each county, and complete the table below, which will mostly entail entering the index value (a number between 0 and 1) for each measure that is provided in a panel on the website after you click on a particular census tract. Note that individual measures are within larger categories, such as Air Pollution or Built Environment. Measure Columbia County Census Tract Richmond County Census Tract Census Tract Number EJI Rank Environmental Burden Rank Ozone PM2.5 Air Toxics Cancer Risk Toxics Release Inventory Sites Lack of Recreational Parks Lack of Walkability Impaired Surface Water Minority Status Poverty High Estimated Evidence of Asthma (Y/N) High Estimated Evidence of Diabetes (Y/N)
Biol 1102-A, Assignment 5, p. 3 b. Based on the index values in the table above, briefly discuss any general differences between the two tracts, (including in an environmental justice context) recognizing you have selected just one census tract in each county. c. For one of the measures above related to the environment, indicate one step the appropriate local government could take to improve the measure (i.e., so it becomes a smaller number, indicating a healthier environment). After completing the assignment, upload the document (either as a Word or pdf file) to the Assessments, Assignments module in D2L, for Assignment 5, by the deadline noted above. Note this is an individual assignment , so you must do your own work. A reminder to be familiar with the policies in the AU Student Manual on academic integrity, violation of which may result in zero points for the assignment.
