To provide an accurate account of the data. To critically analyze the data and provide a reasonable interpretation of the results. Lab Report Title Page Introduction The "Introduction" of a laboratory report should clearly state the objective, the importance of the experiment and overall background information. The background information should contribute to understanding the experiment, why it is being conducted, and the importance of the lab topic to real life. Write this information as if you were communicating to another A & P student who has not yet covered this subject. The objectives of the experiment are important to state because these objectives are usually analyzed in the conclusion. Materials and Methods The Materials and Methods (M&M) section discusses how the experiment occurred or was carried out. Documenting the procedures of your laboratory experiment is important not only so that others can repeat your results but also so that you can replicate the work later, if necessary. M&M sections are usually written as first-person narratives as opposed to second-person sets of instructions. Achieving a proper depth in laboratory procedures is challenging. In general, you should give the audience enough information so that they could replicate your results. For that reason, you should include those details that affect the outcome. Site the source from which you obtained the procedure for the experiment. Results The results section is an objective written description of the findings. Data gathered from
the experiment is included here in a clear and logical fashion in sentence form. Graphs, tables, etc., should also be used to present your data, and they should be clearly labeled. This will likely be the shortest section of the report, but may not be depending on the breadth of data you have to report. Discussion This is the author’s opportunity to go beyond the simple reporting of data and analyze that data. A brief (1-2 sentences) summary of the results is appropriate to open this section before analysis or discussion. After the data summary, it is time to answer such questions as: What do they mean to the investigators? What conclusions can be drawn based on these data, and why? What problems may have occurred in the experiment that could have affected the outcomes or conclusions? If the data are unexpected, how may those errors or deviations be explained? Finally state what you learned from the experiment. How could the information from this lab be useful in a healthcare setting?
