WEBQUEST…..ORIGINS of the UNIVERSE
Introduction: Where did everything come from? How did we get here? When did everything begin? Scientists attempt
to answer these questions. In this activity you will research the proposed theories to explain the birth of the universe. Change all your answer text to RED
!!
Part I: Definitions
Go to: https://www.merriam-webster.com
1)
Cosmology - a branch of astronomy that deals with the origin, structure, and space-time relationships of the universe
2)
Electromagnetic Spectrum - the entire range of wavelengths or frequencies of electromagnetic radiation
extending from gamma rays to the longest radio waves and including visible light
3)
Spectrum (plural is spectra) - a continuum of color formed when a beam of white light is dispersed (as by passage through a prism) so that its component wavelengths are arranged in order
Part II: Details of The Big Bang Theory
Use Google to find these answers:
1)
When did the Big Bang occur?
13.8 Billion years ago
2)
What happened during the Big Bang?
The universe began as a tiny, dense, fireball that exploded.
3)
In 1929, what did Edwin Hubble discover?
He discovered that the more distant a galaxy is from us, the faster it appears to be receding into space
4)
How does the redshift support the Big Bang Theory?
The Doppler red-shift of light observed from distant stars and galaxies gives evidence that the universe
is expanding. This allows for Big Bang Theory, because after a “bang” occurs all of the matter moves away from the point of origin
5)
Go to https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/what-is-the-cosmic-microw/
How does cosmic background radiation support the Big Bang Theory? The cosmic microwave background radiation is the faint remnant glow of the big bang. This false color
image, covering about 2.5 percent of the sky, shows fluctuations in the ionized gas that later condensed to make superclusters of galaxies
6)
Go to https://science.howstuffworks.com/dictionary/astronomy-terms/big-bang-theory7.htm
The Big Bang is not uniformly accepted. What is one problem with the theory?
It violates the first law of thermodynamics, which says you can't create or destroy matter or energy

7)
Page 2 of this website: How much of the universe is hydrogen? Helium? Heavier elements? Hydrogen-74%
Helium- 25%
Heavier elements- 1%
8)
How does this fact support the Big Bang Theory?
The observed 3:1 ratio of hydrogen to helium along with the relative scarcity of heavier elements yield critical clues about the density, temperature, and expansion rate of the early universe. The correlations between these observations and the predictions of the Big Bang model are striking pieces of evidence in support for the theory.
Part III: Changes to Big Bang Theory
Go to: https://www.livescience.com/32278-was-the-big-bang-really-an-explosion.html
9)
How is the Big Bang Theory misnamed?
The Big Bang makes it sound like there was a huge explosion and the whole universe expanded but thats not really what happend and space is epxnaded everywhere and not just in the center.
Part IV: Competing Theories
The Steady State Theory:
Go to: https://www.britannica.com/science/steady-state-theory
1) What is the Steady State Theory?
The Steady-state theory is a view that the universe is always expanding but maintaining a constant average density, with matter being continuously created to form new stars and galaxies at the same rate that old ones become unobservable as a consequence of their increasing distance and velocity of recession.
Part VI: Black Hole Origin Theory:
Go to: https://www.space.com/8293-universe-born-black-hole-theory.html
OR
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2003/09/030917072015.htm
1)
In this theory, the Big Bang did happen - where?
Inside a black whole in another universe
Part VIII: Other theories
There are many other theories about the creation of the universe - coming from all cultures and religions. Research 2 and compare and contrast them.
1) Which 2 did you pick to research?
Christian Belief and the Hindu belief
2) Summarize the two theories.
Chirtsians believe according to the Book of Genesis, God created the universe, and all the heavenly bodies, the sun, the moon, and the stars , in six days. Hindu’s believe the universe was created by Brahma, the creator who
made the universe out of himself. After Brahma created the world, it is the power of Vishnu which preserves the world and human beings.
3) Pick one of the 2 you researched. Compare and contrast it with the Big Bang Theory.
The Big Band theoyr talking about how the universe was created from its self but the chirtsian beliefe that a God created the universe and he made it by himself and wasn’t made out of matter.
Part IX: Your thoughts
I want to know what you think!!!! What do you believe and why about the origin of our universe?
Um, this has always been a hard question for me because I really don’t know what to think because I’ve grown up in a church all my life but some things I disagree with so I really don’t know what to think. Like God might have put the materials there for something like the Big Bang to happen but I dont know.
