Learning About Constellations
Pre–lab Questions
Consider the figures on the first page, which each show the 88 officially designated constellations covering a rectangular projection of
the celestial sphere. The upper figure only shows boundaries whereas the lower figure shows star names and constellation lines. Use both
figures to answer the following questions.
1.
List all the constellations that the Sun “passes through” on its apparent path through the celestial sphere.
Capricorns , Aquarius, pieces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Libra, Scorpius, ophiuchus , Sagittarius
2.
List at least three constellations that would appear to take a circumpolar path through the local sky of an observer at the South
Pole.
Carina, centaurus, crux
1.
Identify which constellation contains each of the following astronomical coordinate:
i.
= Ursa Major
ii.
= Puppis
iii.
= Pavo
iv.
= Cassiopeia
v.
= Virgo
vi.
= Draco
vii.
= Orion
1.
Give the astronomical coordinates (Declination and Right Ascension) for each of the following stars:
i.
Sirius = -15.0° dec, 7 h R.A
i.
the brightest star in Taurus= +19.0° dec, 4 h R.A
i.
the second brightest star in Gemini= +30.0° dec, 8 h R.A
ii.
the brightest star in Eridanus= -12.0° dec, 4 h R.A
i.
bright spectral type M star in Orion= +10.0° dec, 6 h R.A
ii.
bright spectral type A star in Lyra= +40.0° dec, 19h R.A
1.
Identify each of the constellations below based on the drawing and report the approximate astronomical coordinates of the
constellations center.
i.
Constellation name: corvus
Dec.: -20.0
RA: 12
ii.
Constellation name: serpens
Dec.: 0
RA: 18
iii.
Constellation name: centaurus
Dec.: -20
