Seismic Activity 1. Describe 3 facts about P waves. - It is the first wave that is recorded in seismograph at the time of the earthquake. - These are compression waves. - These are compression waves. 2. Draw and label the direction of propagation of p waves. 3. What are 3 facts about S waves? These waves move at a velocity that is almost half of that of the p-waves. These waves can only move through a solid medium. The s waves are stopped by liquid layers or structures. 4. Draw and label the direction of propagation of s waves. 5. Describe Rayleigh waves motion. A Rayleigh wave rolls along the ground with a more complex motion than love waves. 6. Describe Love wave motion. Surface waves that move parallel to the Earth’s surface and perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation. 7. What are the measuring scales for earthquakes? Richter scale- measures the largest wiggle amplitude Magnitude scales- measure different parts of the earthquake. 8. How many serious earthquakes are there per year? 16 major earthquakes per year.
