MODULE 10 “For” the 2006 Demotion. Pluto was demoted from full planet status to dwarf planet status by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 2006. The question of whether Pluto was rightly demoted is still being debated. The reason for Pluto's demotion was that it did not fulfill all three requirements for being classified as a full planet and therefore could be regarded as such. The one requirement that Pluto does not satisfy is that a planet must be large enough that it;s gravity clears the neighbourhood around its orbit. Pluto does not have this property so I am for its demotion.. When Mike Brown, a professor of planetary astronomy at the California Institute of Technology, found Eris in 2005, Pluto's planet status was called into doubt. Eris is an object that is 25% more massive than Pluto. It's in the Kuiper Belt, along with Pluto and other unknown objects. These objects are around the same size as Pluto and Eris . This means that if Pluto is restored to full planet status, all of those objects must also be renamed planets. In the Kuiper Belt, there are more than 1,000 objects that are composed of the same icy mixture as pluto. If Pluto were to remain a planet we would find ourselves with an overwhelming number of planets in our solar systems. Pluto clearly does not fit the description and should rightfully be called a dwarf planet. 1. Why is pluto no longer a planet? The Library of Congress. (n.d.).
