Investigation: Galaxies Begin by going to this website: http://cas.sdss.org/dr7/en/proj/advanced/galaxies/ Read the information on the first page and move to the next page by clicking the “Next” button. When you get to the green box “ Exercise 1 ”, you will be able to download the SkyServer Workbook, which is an Excel spreadsheet that contains a table of several galaxies. Follow the directions to fill in the table. DO NOT ANSWER questions 1 through 3. Instead, answer the following: What primary characteristics describe each group? Write your answer in one of the boxes of the spreadsheet below the table. Next, you will come to “ Exercise 2 ” where you will use Hubble’s classification to determine the type of each galaxy. Record these in the new table you download from SkyServer. The next part is “ Exercise 3 ” where you will launch the Navigation tool and look at an image of a cluster of galaxies. You will click on several objects you think are part of the cluster in the Navigation tool. After each galaxy, make sure to “Add to notes” before moving on to the another galaxy. Go to “Show notes” after selecting 15 to 20 galaxies. From here, you can download a table of these galaxies by selecting “CSV” for the type and clicking “export”. Open the notebook.csv table and click on a random empty box below the table to answer the following question: How are these galaxies similar? How are they different? Finally, write a brief (250 words) description of Hubble’s Tuning fork classification diagram. In your description, answer the following question: Do you think that the amount of star formation in galaxies increases or decreases as you go from left to right? Why? You should return to me the spreadsheets for Exercise 1, Exercise 2 and Exercise 3. Also submit your short essay on the Tuning Fork in whatever format you like. Before submitting, rename the spreadsheets with your last name and first initial as follows:
Sarajediniv_exercise1.xls Sarajediniv_exercise2.xls Etc…
