In this area of South Texas, I prioritize self-realization, citizenship, and critical thinking.
In this region of rural, economically disadvantaged families and overflown of immigrants, our
students must learn who they are, where they belong, and what they think. The incredibly high
drug culture that surrounds our students every day shows their desperate need to numb
themselves to the realities of their existence. What they do not know, what they cannot know
unless taught, is that such an existence does not have to be theirs. The tremendous responsibility
of teaching comes with the opportunity to effect change.
In Cherry's article (2002) it states that
the "practice of 'mindfulness' derived from the Eightfold Noble path has become a therapeutic
technique for those who are anxious and disoriented in today's world," and now more than ever,
students must become aware of who they are not only perceptually but spiritually.
Citizenship is to know one's reflection in a community is not stifling; it is freeing, for in
the knowledge of belonging comes the opportunity for change. Students spend most of their time
with teachers rather than with parents or caregivers; therefore, in my region, teachers become
more than the one who teaches-but; merely the one who nurtures and counsel. I have seen
students buckle to thinking differently, not because they cannot but because they have not been
given the tools to defend their judgment. Most of the students here have been blessed to have a
dual sense of different communities since we are a "border" town, and to own that value through
citizenship is looking forward to becoming or making a change for the betterment of everyone.
Critical reflective thinking has been conceptualized as a means to apply "reflective
judgment" in applying knowledge and information (Azfar & Tan, 2023, p.22). We live in a
society of instant gratification, and growth occurs in waiting. We are in such a hurry, all the time,
to be at the successive moments of our lives. Thus, we neglect the moment where we are. We
need to examine our thoughts, goals, and futures critically. As educators, it is incumbent upon us
to reflect on the whole. To encourage our students to look deeper into their thoughts but always
maintain sight of the whole. Social media and technology have invaded our young learner's
possibility to think critically or understand complex situations but aim for rapid solutions without
understanding the possible consequences. The Bible reassures such vital assets as self-
realization, citizenship, and critical thinking in verse 2 Timothy 2:7 "Think over what I say, for
the Lord will give you understanding in everything," thus, I firmly believe that walking in faith
and spirit, we shall always find ourselves, even in this world of turmoil.
