Explain Your Choice
What interests you about this story?
I chose "KNEIDLER". because it shows how a relationship between grandmother and
granddaughter are no matter what. Julia remembering her past within World War II and what she
went through, tells a story that her granddaughter would not be able to learn from a book.
Passing down recipes for Frankie to pass down to her daughter or granddaughter one day she will
always cherish.
How can learning about your story’s topic (Traditions, Customs, and Beliefs) help you
develop a better understanding of the culture represented in the story you chose?
Learning new recipes, learning things that Julia went through during one of the hardest past
times and how she survived. I would like to better understand the culture from her point of view
when she was living through it not just hearing about it.
Preview Your Story
Who is the creator of this story?
Frankie Wallach
Where is the creator from?
France
When was this story created?
"Kneidler"
, was made in 2017
What do you think the title of this story might mean?
At first, I had no idea what "
Kneidler
" meant. Until I watched the little film and read the short
description, I realized it was a recipe.
Which details presented in the background information stand out to you?
One of the things that stood out to me was Julia reliving her memories from World War II.
Another one was this short story was about a grandmother and granddaughter.
2
Summarize Your Story
Who are the main characters in this story?
The grandmother: Julia and the granddaughter Frankie.
Where does this story take place?
The story I believe takes place in France.
Describe what happens in this story.
Moral of the story is Julia explains some memoires from her past life during the holocaust. She
explains the recipe she is cooking and invites her granddaughter to make it with her. She
describes things about what she went through during the holocaust.
What is the main decision or conflict presented in this story?
In my opinion, the main decision is teaching Frankie how to make this dish that takes Julia back
in memory to her pasttimes.
Interpret Your Story
What do you think the creator meant to communicate to viewers with this story?
Passing down recipes from one generation to the next, But also describing why she knows how
to make this dish what memories it brings up for the grandmother to remember.
What details from the story support your interpretation of its meaning?
Julia describes that her hair is frizzy due to it being shaved many times during the holocaust.
Julia shows the number ID tattooed on her skin when the war was going on and she was sent to a
concentration camp. Julia also describes the recipe and how to make it and what to do with the
veggies and chicken. But my main point is to show the love of family no matter what has
happened.
Connect with Your Story
What values do you see in the characters’ actions?
The values I see within this video are compassion, self-determination, nurturing. It is easy to see
that this grandmother (Julia) has great pride in her cooking, and she wants Frankie to see how

she does the cooking and Frankie clearly adores her grandmother and intrigued about how she
learned to cook this meal.
What details from the story led you to identify those values?
Right off the bat you can see compassion throughout this entire video. Mami Julia wants to show
Frankie (granddaughter) how she makes this dish; Kneidler, and how she learned to cook it.
When Frankie asks a question, Julia does not sugar coat anything, compassionate about how she
learned to make it and explains to Frankie why she makes it that way. Julia also showed
compassion when discussing the concentration camp for all that she endured while working in
the kitchen, and Frankie was also intrigued about the numbers tattooed on Julias arm and asking
her questions. Julia was self-determined by getting her stick to be able to reach things to me that
showed that she was determined to do things on her own the way she was taught and not depend
on anyone else to do it for her. Regarding nurturing value, Frankie was nurturing with Julia
within regards to her past, loving to hear how Julia has come so far in life to reach the age of 90
years old. They both are nurturing to each other and you can see the love and compassion they
have for each other when working in the kitchen to sitting in the dining room.
How are your values similar to the values you identified in the story?
I share the same values with my children. They do not know my whole past situation of what I
went through, but we share compassion. I sometimes create the same meals that I made for
myself when I lived with friends, and when my children ask me how I learned to cook them, I
tell them the truth, I taught myself how to cook by trial and error because back then cell phones
and internet wasn't a big thing, but cooking similar recipes I did back then, brings back memories
and also takes me back by how far I have come. I want my children to always believe that
anything is possible if you try hard enough and if at first you do not succeed, try again until you
do. I share self determination with my oldest son because he is a lot like me. He is compassionate
about everything and very hard on himself if he fails. He tries to see the good in everyone and
tries to nurture everyone he comes into contact with.
How are your values different from the values you identified in the story?
Honestly, they do not differ from the story to my own. It brings back memories from how I am
with my children. Or I hope my children are with me.
How did the characters in the story approach decision making or conflict resolution?
Provide two examples.
When Julia asks for Frankie to bring her grabber to help her get something that she dropped,
Frankie went to get it. Julia could have got flustered or anxious maybe even embarrassed for
asking for it, but she didn't she laughed and mocked herself and make it a joke. Frankie was
4
intrigued about why Julia had to shave her head while in the concentration camp. Julia describes
the illness prevented her from not shaving her head, and the third time she refused to shave it.
Frankie was amazed that Julia stood up for herself and refused to do it even though Julia's friends
encouraged her to shave it.
How is this similar to the way you approach decision making or conflict resolution?
Provide two examples.
I am short, so when Julia described herself as "lopsided" I chuckled because I too tell my family
and joke that I am lopsided. I tend to mock myself when I mess something up or get discouraged
and instead of being angry, I laugh it off. I want my children to know that it's okay if your caught
in a conflict or have a decision to make that you don't know how to answer. Laughing and joking
is contagious, instead of being angry, you laugh, because other people too will laugh and then
come up with a solution together. When Julia described shaving her head and then stopped doing
it for the third time, she stood her ground, and everyone was okay with it.
How is this different from the way you approach decision making or conflict resolution?
Provide two examples.
I get flustered sometimes when I cannot reach something and have to ask for a stool or help, but
it kind of is a joke in our household by all of us, I joke with my kids that they too will be short
even though their dad is super tall. I tell them being short is because God made us "fun-sized" I
do not ask for help for often because I get embarrassed easily, growing up the way I did, I didn't
have anyone on my side. I had to learn to adapt to what I had. I learned how to be independent
the same way that Julia was within the camp.
What do you think these characters’ approaches to decision making and/or conflict
resolution might say about their cultural values?
For Julia, I believe her approaches are due to her upbringing. Especially what she endured within
the concentration camp. Having to be told what and how to think was probably very hard. I feel
as if Frankie learned a lot regarding her grandmother's decision making, and I feel as if she will
learn to be like her grandmother and conquer with grace anything that comes her way.
Reflect on Your Week 7 Assignment
What is one main takeaway you have after analyzing this story? Be sure to include a
specific example.
I took away from this video that even though you go through something hard, you can always
embrace it and come back stronger. The way that Julia fought back to achieve the life she wanted
5
and have her own family even though her upbringing shows great compassion. She is very loved
you can see in the video by her granddaughter, and she came out on top.
What is another main takeaway you have after analyzing this story? Be sure to include a
specific example.
I took away that family is everything. Even when you are older and you raising your family,
whether it be you children or grandchildren, they are always eager to learn. Frankie was eager to
learn and help make the dish; Kneidler with her grandmother in hopes to learn techniques and
make it for her family one day.
How can the insights you gained from evaluating this story and learning about the culture
it reflects help support your personal, academic, or professional goals?
I wasn't so keen on learning about other cultures when I first endured this class if I am being
honest. But one thing I have learned is people are human, there are many different ways to do
things. I have been brought up to be independent because I didn't have parents that cared. One
thing I have learned is there are multiple different ways of doing things. This class and even
video has taught me that my beliefs aren't the only way to do things and it is okay to ask for help
and not get belittled. Watching this video has taught me that I can still joke about my personal
life just as Julia and Frankie did even though they are Jewish, we still share the same values.
Since I am in Criminal Justice, I too have to be open about learned different cultures because I
will be dealing with more than 1 or 2 cultures and their way of doing things will most likely be
different then the way I was raised.
Which of the critical thinking strategies did you find the most helpful when working on this
assignment?
Gather Information
What is one way that this critical thinking strategy could help you better understand the
cultures of people you meet in your personal or professional life?
By gathering all information, you get a view from every standpoint and understand the situation
better and not come up with scenarios. Assuming you know something by very little detail is not
the way to go.
What is another critical thinking strategy that you found helpful?
Ask Questions

What is one way that this second critical thinking strategy could help you better
understand the cultures of people you meet in your personal or professional life?
Assuming you know something just by what you see and hear doesn't mean you know the whole
situation. If I do not know something, I will not just assume things I will ask questions, because
if I do not understand it, then I cannot come up with the proper conclusion.
