Targeted Reflection 1
Instruction should be culturally sensitive in every classroom. During my previous
two internships, I watched my cooperating teachers utilizing culturally relevant teaching
techniques. They built relationships with their students, brought their cultures into the
classroom, thought about the design of the classroom, and used their students' prior
knowledge in order to implement cultural education.
My cooperating teachers developed relationships with their students by saying hello to
them at the door each morning, telling them about themselves, and expressing an interest
in their hobbies. If students' cultures are included in the curriculum, they will be more
likely to pay attention in class and learn the material. My cooperating teacher employed a
range of techniques to bring culture into the classroom. The books that students read have
characters from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. Multiple viewpoints were taken
into account when designing the lessons. The presentation of videos featuring individuals
from various civilizations using technology. Through coursework and projects, students
were able to conduct independent research. The design of the classroom must be taken
into account while practicing culturally responsive teaching. They did this by offering
books that represented other cultures and by hanging posters that represented all of the
students. Activating past knowledge not only helps the instructor understand what the
students already know, but it also helps the teacher comprehend the culture to which the
students belong and what they are aware of.
As part of our partnership, my cooperating teacher would give the students instructions
on how to apply a subject they were learning to their daily lives in order to draw on their
prior knowledge. She encouraged the students to think back to a period when they had
moved or traveled while they were studying immigration into the state of Florida.
