I would love to discuss and go into detail about my existing knowledge of
telecommunications and how it has influenced us in different ways. I can't wait to dive into the
different lenses of history, humanities, social science as well as natural and applied sciences. I
can honestly say I have never viewed one subject in different lenses before. It gives me a deeper
connection with the technology I use at my current job as a customer service representative
taking calls to assist members with their healthcare Insurance needs. Jumping back to when I was
a young girl having a phone connected to a wall with limited privacy thinking we had it good
talking to our friends. Now, jumping to the future, we have cell phones. We can now contact
people across the world with the click of a button and within seconds we have access to what we
need. It amazes me how far we have come with technology and the possibilities are endless.
Now by looking at telephone from a historical lens You can look back in time to see that
an Italian innovator Antonio Meucci invented the basic phone in 1849. Then we have Martin
Cooper, an American engineer who led a team to build the first cell phone in 1972. The way we
view phones today, we could have never imagined 40 years ago.
Starting my journey thinking about the telephone from a humanities lens. We have grown
and evolved from being able to talk to someone in a different location to now sending a video or
facetiming. Some of the time there can be a text message that is all emojis (pictures), which
brings me to having a lack of interaction in our culture and society. It seems as if we as human
beings need to bring back that creativity within the interaction with each other. I believe people
express themselves however they feel which is portrayed in the world using their smartphone and
applications such as Instagram, TikTok.
To apply the Natural and applied science lens to the telephone, we will be gaining a
deeper understanding of how people are affected by using telecommunications. Since there is
more than one way to speak with someone verbally and we have touched base on text messaging,
we can also use multiple applications, one of them that I use for work to communicate with my
co-workers while helping a patient. TEAMS is an ultimate messaging application for
organizations to keep in touch throughout the day.
Lastly, viewing telecommunications through a social science lens. To view this subject,
we need to study society and the relationships between people. Seeing how we have slowly been
experiencing a lack in our society of not being able to have a meaningful conversation, learning
and growing from one another. I would say that mostly everyone in the world has experienced
using telecommunications in some way. And I believe that we will grow and invent something
hopefully to bring us back together as a society.
