PRESENT AND FUTURE OF AMERICAN EDUCATION 1 Module 8-Discussion Forum: Present and Future of American Education Departament of Education, Ana G. Mendez University EDUC 714: Historical and Philosophical Perspectives on Education
PRESENT AND FUTURE OF AMERICAN EDUCATION 2 What do you understand is the present and future of American education? In our present, United States public educational system is going through an evident deterioration. American citizens are extremely concerned and there is an increasing anxiety in regards to the factors impeding United States to place in the top countries for excellence in education. It is important to mention that after the 1983 report titled :”A Nation at Risk” The Imperative for Educational Reform , interest for a school reform emerged. As Babones (2015) mentions: “ Among other things, the report contributed to the ever-growing assertion that American schools were failing, and it touched off a wave of local, state, and federal reform efforts. This event provoked a series of reforms with the goal to make our public educational system more uniform, with the requirement of standardized testing to measure not only student accountability but also the school accountability. Schools today need to embrace the technologies of the 21 st century where students use the classroom as a collaborative space, solving real-life problems along other students from the globe, throughout the use of collective knowledge. In that sense, we need to mention that education is changing so vertiginous as technology. For example, technologies such as virtual reality, artificial intelligence, robotics, and blended/virtual learning are contributing to the birth of “digital natives”, making technology an integral part of our children’s lives. In conclusion, students should be the center in every decision making process at the national and institutional levels. We can then comment that our educational system needs to focus on preparing our students to critically look for solutions to the issues we face today and the insertion into the future workforce, always taking into the respect for account culture and diversity.
