ETHNOGRAPHIC INTERVIEW: PRE-INTERVIEW RESEARCH SHADA’ WILSON GLOBAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT, LIBERTY UNIVERSITY GLST 290: CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY PROFESSOR BRANDON COX SEPTEMBER 18, 2023
Mr. Garland Conner is an 88-year-old white male who originally hales from Bent Mountain, Virginia. I have known Mr. Conner for nearly 2 years now, as he is one of my home health clients. When I first met this man, he was recently widowed and experiencing a great deal of depression. Mr. Garland follows The Church of the Brethren as his religion. I've spent a lot of time with my client, so I've come to understand that this religion is a commitment to obey Christ and to follow Him obediently in a contemporary world. The Brethren share the majority of Christians’ belief in God as loving Creator and Sustainer. He reveals that he confesses Christ as Lord and that he seeks the guidance of the Holy Spirit in all facets of his life and thinking. Mr. Garland further reveals that the Brethren use the New Testament as their manual for living, affirming the necessity of a lifelong commitment to fervent Bible study. Brethren hold that through the Hebrew Scriptures (or Old Testament) and fully in the New Testament, God has fully revealed a purpose for the human family and the universe that is still being revealed. According to my client, the New Testament serves as a history of the Christian church, as well as a record of the life, ministry, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I've been in the healthcare industry for almost 20 years and have learned that older people are more accustomed to using formal terms of address. As soon as I met Mr. Garland, I realized that he was a talker and that I needed to make a good impression by using formal language by default (such as Mr.) and avoiding everyday expressions like "dear," which could be interpreted as disrespectful. However, he is constantly chatting when I arrive in the mornings. Even though it frequently seems as though he's attempting to cut off my ear, I remind myself that he grew up in a very different technological era from myself. At the dinner table, members of Mr. Garland's generation used to sit face to face and converse nonstop about their happenings.
Due to a gun accident as a teenager, Mr Garland had been left with no right arm which often caused friends and family members to try to set him up on dates with women they believed would be able to take care of him. At the age of 25, Mr. Garland was introduced to a woman by the name of Alice Scruggs by family and friends. The two were married for 28 years and welcomed 2 daughters into their lives. However, Mr. Garland confesses that he never believed that he and Alice truly loved one another the way a married couple should, which is why they eventually divorced. Pitching a baseball game, Mr. Garland became lost in a pair of what he describes as the prettiest blue eyes he'd ever seen, which belonged to Virginia Sutton. Although she was 16 years his junior, the two fell madly in love and were married for 38 years until she died in 2022. When it comes to conflict, I recently overheard my client and his granddaughter having a verbal argument, which makes me think that he doesn't hesitate to express his thoughts and feelings in public. I'm not sure if he had always been more reserved around me or if this is just how he is. To vent his frustration, Mr. Garland has instead chosen to pick fights, write letters, and make phone calls since the incident.
