My View of Human Nature
I think that we all have our different views amongst human nature and
while I was taking this assessment, I realized how others think differently than I do and how we all view things differently. A theoretical orientation is something that may show and guide a therapist or counselor in their interactions with clients in a way that is advantageous to both of them. In other words, a theoretical orientation is the method that one uses that helps
them best help their client. It is an outline with their choice of theory to help them with their clients. The three theories I matched with the closest are the Adlerian, Person-Centered, and the Integrative Therapy Approach theory. I think the Adlerian theory is accurate because I strongly believe that setting realistic and strong goals can help one go a long way. I also think that this theory is accurate because I think that focusing on someone’s potential along with setting goals to help them be successful is very cooperative in the process. I
think that the Person-Centered theory is also accurate because this theory is also about self-actualization and about being positive while helping a client. According to the National Library of Medicine, “
Person-centered therapy operates on the humanistic belief that the client is inherently driven
toward and has the capacity for growth and self-actualization; it relies on this force for therapeutic change. The role of the counselor is to provide a nonjudgmental environment conducive to honest self-exploration.” (Yao & Kabir, 2023, para. 7). I would say that I am a very positive person and I
believe that being positive helps one feel loved and important. I also scored the highest in this theory and as I looked more into it, I discovered how accurate it was that I matched with it. One of the other theories I matched with is Integrative Therapy Approach. I agree with theory because I think it’s a good idea to be open minded and reach out to other sources in order to provide what is best for the client. After taking this assessment, I noticed that my scores for each theory were all pretty close. However, one of the theories that I scored the lowest in is the cognitive theory and I believe that there is accuracy and inaccuracy
in this scoring. One of the questions in this area said that it is unnecessary to receive love and be accepted by others. (Theoretical Orientation Scale, n.d). I strongly disagreed with this because it goes against my own beliefs. In the Christian Worldview, we are to love one another and accept others for
who they are. Those who are loving are going to be the ones who are supportive, and I believe that we need love and support to reach certain goals and improve on ourselves in life. In other words, because of this aspect in the theory, I understand why I didn’t match with this theory as high. However, I do believe that making connections with a client’s behaviors and the cognitive process in general would be super helpful to know how to help the client in the best way. Therefore, I believe that this part of the assessment was inaccurate.
I do not think that this assessment as a whole is completely accurate because I did not know how to answer some of the questions accurately. In

other words, it was difficult to come up with an opinion for some of the questions because I do not have the knowledge to know what each of them are yet. I also think that the theories that we match with overtime will change. We’ll gain more knowledge as time goes on and will have more experiences which means our values can change over time. An example of this would be how in four years from now I will most likely know a lot more about social determinants than I do now. So, having more knowledge in a certain area can change my view. All my answers that I put neutral for, I chose just because I didn’t know what some of the items meant. My score at
the end for each theory will be different one day when I am more knowledgeable about each of the items. However, the three areas I scored the highest in were very accurate in where I stand and how I would approach a client. I think that having more knowledge would have made the
assessment more accurate because I would have had more opinions on them
than I do right now.
